    The person who hits it gets first dibs. If I wanted it I do believe I would have to let the county Sheriff know. The person who hit it left the scene, so I don't know if it was called in. I don't want a car hit deer. Never know how much damage was done to the meat and cutting up a deer is not in my schedule.

    few years ago MT started a "salvage" hunting tag - basically you pay a super cheap fee for a general tag and you can pick up road kill. saw a guy pull a u turn once to get an elk that someone had hit and was lying on the side of the road.

    In VA you can keep it if you hit it. call game warden and he will give you a posession number. if its a big buck they may come to verify.but usually the meat is bruised and bloody and not worth the time and effort. coyotes got to eat too.
