If I ever need a 2nd commuter car I'm going to be looking to them as well.
It would have to be a 1st gen Mazda3 though. The new 2nd gen 2011's look too tacky.

lol I noticed that too with the Mazdas.
My mom & I have civics. My sister a corolla.
My neighbor just bought their daughter a corolla.
I see a ton of Mazdas all around where I live. The ones you want are good economical cars.
Are you looking new or private sale?
Craiglist, ebay or autotrader is full of them
We bought my mom's used (2004) from a small used wholesaler who gets his cars from auctions. As a family friend he was on the lookout for us. My sister's was a hand me down. The neighbor's new from a dealership.
    Good luck.

I'll vote for Civic til the end of my days. I've had two...'99 EX Coupe and an '08 Si Sedan. Absolutely loved them both and never had an issue with either.

I am thinking about doing the opposite and selling my 95integra and buying a 3rd gen 4runner. I bought it a couple years ago when gas prices went crazy ($5/gal) and mainly use it as my winter car.

    X1000 on Subie!!
I drive an '05 Impreza 2.5RS wagon, black manual, as well as the '10 Taco. When the weather turns to shit, give me my Scooby every time.
It is unstoppable in snow, handles all conditions like a dream, and soooo suh-weet to drive. Its like when you get to 120km, she whispers in your ear "just a little faster, daddy" and you ease the pedal a little further and she replies "that's it, a little more, I can take it" and...

    whoa
uh did I say the Impreza is a good choice?
We just paid it off, and IF it ever dies, it will most likely be replaced with another Impreza. I love all Subaru, but my Scooby is the BEST.CAR.EVER.
Did I mention how Sexy she is?

Looking back on this post, I hope I haven't shown too much Subie-love. Yay, Toyota rocks. Woo-hoo.

x-12 on the subaru. Had several.. love the boxer and the butt ugly utility factor.. but they're just shitty cars. You can get a good one on occasion, but its a crap shoot.. like the old ford taurus. 300,000 miles or 35000 and tons of trouble.

You don't see old subarus on the road... My neighbor has forrester with 25k miles on its second transmission and wheel bearings, needing brakes badly. Probably a worst case scenario but still.

My experience is not much better. Love em/hate em. If honda or real toyota made subarus I'd definitely own one.

Also they have elaborate timing systems and most if not all are interference engines.

I know a lot of people on this board make fun of them, but a Prius isn't a bad car. It does get around 45 miles per gallon and is about the same size as a Corolla, maybe a little smaller. Ford has introduced a new hybrid as well. Honda's hybrid also gets great mileage.

Price difference is very small concerning compact/subcompact cars between CA/USA. It's not worth the hassle.

Large car, luxury cars and trucks are another story.

Personally fwiw (all in manual ftw)
    1. Impreza - nuff said
    2. Corolla - Grandad's car, but I can't help but think its probably the all-around best buy out there - sold it for Scooby
2/3. Civic - not for me, but hey millions can't be wrong
    4. Yaris - traded it for Taco. Needed and wanted a truck as we live rurally. But in a city, Surprise, I'd buy another like that. Peppy as hell, roomy and actually fun to drive. And it has a style. Not style. A style. Niece calls it BubbleCar.

Going second hand, try NLClassifieds.com - some cool Tacos listed there too
