It's a little work to install, but well within most people's capability. But like I said, when it comes to the electronics part the kit has everything done for you and you just plug it in. Now if you are one of those folks that hates working on cars or have no clue which end of a screwdriver to hold, then paying the man to do it for you is still worth it.

So if I understand correctly, if you have it, someone can break into the cab, hit the unlock button to unlock the tailgate, but if you don't have it, a thief can't do this?

I don't think so. You'd need the fob or have to have it nearby. :notsure:

Edit: We need someone to test and confirm on here.

I don't know how a Tacoma works in that situation, but if my Xterra is locked with the windows open and I reach in and hit the unlock button, it sets off the car alarm and re-locks immediately. The same thing would happen if you broke in and tried to unlock the doors.

The power tailgate lock is actually is a little noisy when actuating. Louder than the doors. But love the piece of mind along with my OEM Tonneau cover.

Isn’t that what insurance is for? Either way, I’ve never worried about or heard anyone worry about their tailgate being stolen except on this forum.

I guess I’m in the minority. I’ve never had a desire to lock my tailgate. I don’t see how it’s going to prevent anyone from stealing anything out of my truck. I didn’t even know that was an option until someone mentioned it on here in a past thread. I still have yet to look to see if I have one.

yes, it can be what insurance is for. But that is not without its own “cost”, which at the very least is a bunch of running around and dealing with adjusters and shops you otherwise wouldn’t have had to deal with. The other side of it is premiums and increased real costs. Now I doubt most would have an adjustment to their premium due to a stolen tailgate, but the insurance companies get their money back somehow.

I have yet to hear such a thing on THIS forum since I am relatively new, but I have been seeing it for many many years. Tailgates are easy to damage and easy to steal, that alone will make them desirable.

Ok, but insurance covers the entire truck, not just the tailgate. Many people are going to have insurance regardless of whether they have a tailgate lock.

Stuff can be stolen out of my truck easier than a tailgate can.

Take your tailgate inside with you?

I have a lock on the tailgate that keeps it from getting stolen. Don’t need a power lock for this.

This lock is quieter and costs less and allows opening of the tailgate with the doors locked.

No regrets. OEM was super easy to install - 30-45 min as I recall. Nice to have as I always have my golf clubs in the back when there isn't snow on the ground.

    and?

mid your tailgate gets stolen you still have to deal with the headach of getting it replaced, that is what I described.

why bring it inside, it has a lock. That’s what we are talking about isn’t it?…

My polnt was that if it’s too much of PITA to take the tailgate with you (the very best way to prevent it from being stolen), then it might be too much of a PITA for a casual criminal as well. Serous criminals are going to steal your stuff regardless of a lock.

Does anyone have reliable statistics on the number of tailgates being stolen? Hopefully the stats are grouped by geographical location.

Are you sure this is a tailgate specific key? I have the same model and year truck as you, and the spare key I got was just as a substitute for a second fob, since they were short due to supply issues. Both keys work in all the doors and tailgate.

"Serious" criminals probably wouldn't even try to take it. Those guys steal hundreds of rims from the dealership and stuff like that.
