Don’t even look at Olukai then. You *might* get a pair of simple leather for $70. $100+ for their good stuff.

Thanks for this. It gives me something to go to my dealer with whenever I deal with the same issue. Did they give you an estimate of when the work will be done or how long it will take?

They were olukai. And it was about 8 years ago, I’m sure the prices have gone up. I later scored a pair on sale.

They told me they did an officially diag on it on Friday, found the issue and are having the parts overnighted. They said they expect it to be done by Monday afternoon, not too bad of a turnaround.

Mine overfilled once with the full flow of the pump (it didn’t shut off at all). It ended up flooding the evap canister and immediately threw a code. Those things are expensive.

I don’t leave the side of the truck when refueling now.

I got my 21 in June and I have had this same issue the last 3 fill ups. I mentioned it to the dealer during my first (5K mile) Toyota Care appointment yesterday. The shop manager came out to discuss this with me and said he had never seen this issue in 20+ years. I got him to ride with me to the pump and witness a fill up. We were able to replicate the issue and he got it on video.

By the time the maintenance appointment was over they decided the fuel tank assembly needed to be replaced. Supposedly he sent the video to a contact at Toyota and that person said they had seen a few of these. He told me there is supposed to be a flapper valve between the gas tank and filler neck. They ran a camera down the filler neck and said they did not see a flapper so it was either stuck or missing. The part is supposed to arrive Saturday and I have an appointment to have it replaced Monday. They said it should take about 1/2 a day.

My truck goes in next Thursday. The dealership wasn't super surprised and said they've heard about this occurring with Rav4s.

Didn't have time to read all 6 pages, but my guess would be you have a vent issue.....with that said, the only advice is take it back to the dealer and let them fix it.

Anyone who had the fix done at the dealer - how have you fillups gone since getting the work done?

I only had that issue at Arco AM/PM with their nozzles. But this only happened when I had my Jeep. With the new Tacoma I topped it off 3 times and no issues like what you described.

I have only filled up once, right after I left the dealer upon completion of the fix. I used the same pump that they witnessed the spilling at and it filled and shut off with no issue. Hopefully it continues that way.

I went to the dealership and we were able to reproduce the issue at the local Sheetz.

The belief is that the flap that is attached to the gas tank is the issue and the whole tank needs replaced. Apparently this flap opens when refueling. They believe mine isn't opening the whole way, so towards the end when refueling the gas rushes up the filler neck too fast for the pump to shut off properly.

I'm going to go back in next week for them to drop the tank and inspect the flap if Toyota gives them issues, but we have video proof so no big deal.

Happened once to me on my '21 I has it set on the slow setting. Possibly not enough back pressure to trigger the shut off. Never happened again when I blast it in. It's been talked about on previous thread people suggested that it's either a pump problem or vent problem on the truck. I just run it in on the high setting and have no issues.

Yeap it appears to only be some of the 2021s. Dealer said they have seen RAV4s with this issue, so its not entirely unknown to them.

Sounds like an issue from the factory and not something that will develop over time.

For the last 5 or so fill ups yes I have had the same issue. Costco gas station, BP gas station, Shell, it happened to me numerous times. Thanks to this thread I will go in with the knowledge of fault vent valve and see what they say. I guess I should go in with 1/2 a tank before they believe me. Cheers.

Replacement gas tank for my Tacoma arrived at the dealer today. I get it installed tomorrow. Fingers crossed this fixes the issue.

New tank was installed and no overfill issues on the first fill up. The Toyota mechanic showed me the broken valve in the old tank. I would say if you have a 2021 or 2022 that overfills early on take it in ASAP.
