Working on disc brake internal parking brake sucks way more.

The new EPB on all the toyotas including tunrda will save us from this.

People think that the FJ and 4runners are simple disc brakes but they are a nightmare for a DIY to repair.

It’s only when I use the parking brake. I’m well aware of this issue with wet drum brakes flash rusting, but this is not that. This problem is somewhat self-inflicted as when the shop that put my lift on initially installed it, they did not slacken off the parking brake cable to compensate, so I had random wheel lock-ups for a while. These wheel lock-ups bent something on the backing plate that has plagued this one wheel for a long time. As the shoes have worn down it’s gotten a little worse. Every so often it sticks when releasing the parking brake, even when dry, and it’s not the cable. It’s like one part moves just a little too far, or has a little bit of play it shouldn’t have. I was hoping to figure out just what is bent or loose and tune it up a little. A new axle and backing plate is $2000 or something so I don’t really want to buy the whole assembly.

I have tried to do this with it assembled, but have not yet disassembled it all. Trying to figure out what I’m up against to do that. Someone said somewhere here you need techstream if you have to bleed the rear brakes, so I’m a little nervous. Just trying to get the “lay of the land” under the drums as I’m no expert (yet) on what goes on in there. They are a bit intimidating, admittedly, to look at with all the springs and plates, and levers, and worm screws and other shit in there. I’m sure to a mechanic’s eyes it’s all easy, but I gotta start slow.

I understand being intimidated, it looks worse that it really is. Buy a few tools and take your time, remember the other side isn't identical, it is a mirror image. For a dissemble/clean/inspect/lube/reassemble you shouldn't need to bleed the brakes.

You will need the three tools below. All are available at your local NAPA store, maybe $20 for all of them.

    Left: Shoe hold down tool
    Center: Brake spring pliers
Right: Brake spoon -- turns the star wheel to set the shoe clearance with the drum on

While you are there pick up some brake grease too. Keep the bottle capped and it will last you decades.

And a can of cleaner too, this stuff is quite useful for more than just brakes, might as well get 2 cans.

Thanks man. I really appreciate this advice. I’ve got the brake cleaner and grease, but gotta pick up the tools for sure.

I think the somewhat missed sarcasm of my original post ended up infecting the whole thread. Everyone gets a pass in this thread. We are all in it together with our drum brakes.
