Yeah maybe, might depend on the size of the crock pot. I feel like this has been asked before and the results were a no go. Anyways hope it works, update us when you figure it out OP.

 

The crockpot should have a UL sticker on it that shows the power consumption. Without knowing that your question cannot be answered.

Average crockpot draws 250 watts on low. Just plug it in on low setting and if breaker pops. Cold chili.

 

I used a cardboard box, figured it would absorb any possible spill while driving, this was in a 4Runner. For the life of me, I can’t remember if it stayed on while I was driving.

 

Simple.
1: Meat
2: Chili peppers
3: Seasoning

 

I read this and all I can envision is the episode where Kramer is cooking while in the shower.

 

My truck: with the engine running the rear outlet supports 400 watts, engine off 100 watts.

 

SO...280 Watts? Is that the max with the crockpot on high? I am cooking the chili at home in a roaster, the crock pot will be just to keep it warm for 1.5-2 hours.

Also, what happens if it draws too much? Is there a "GFCI" style breaker in the system, or will I need a new fuse?

Cook your chili at home.

Set the crockpot on LOW, the Taco should keep it warm.

I’ve used this little 20oz crock pot while out camping and off-roading. It draws 50watts so you can’t go much higher than this if you plan on using it while driving unless you have the 400w anytime mod.

I know you already got your answer (more or less). But I have to ask... Are you asking so you can drive with a pot of chili cooking in the back? Or you just want to keep it warm while you're tailgating? The latter seems reasonable. If it's the former, I think you most of that chili would end up in the bed.

It might run on the low setting with the engine off. It might run better on the keep warm setting. Fill the ceramic bowl with water and test it out in your driveway. (to simulate the proper payload) Let it go for 20 minutes and see if it's still on. My hunch is the lower temp setting would draw less power. Not sure if it would get you down below 100 watts, but it's an easy experiment. You won't break anything on your truck. It just won't supply enough power to run the cooker, or it will.

Alternately, you can get yourself a cheap 300watt+ inverter that plugs into your cigarette lighter outlet. The only issue is that you'd be drawing a lot of current from the battery, so me personally I'd still be kicking on the engine every now and then to make sure the battery was ok.

I have a solar panel and a golf cart battery paired with a cheap inverter that I use for powering stuff "off-grid." Works ok.

 

Although, if you've got any camping gear, it might be easier and more reliable to just dump the chili into a regular pot and bring along your propane stove (Coleman, backpacking burner, whatever)... OR... new idea... just get a few cans of Sterno (chafing fuel) from the grocery store...

 

I'm pretty certain that the Taco invertor requires a running engine to operate.

With that said, parked and running you'll be fine even at max 280W draw. Unless you have the 400W driving mod, you are limited to 100W while driving.

I did the 400W while driving mod and added a 4Runner 120V AC outlet to the back of my center console as I can't think of too many times I would be using the bed outlet while driving.

Primarily use my interior console outlet to charge my Jackery 1000 while driving.
