Most certainly.
I have a buddy that has a 4x4 and muds frequently. He has an 05 since new, He was telling me how he got stuck the other day after mudding for years and I started asking him questions, come to find out he has never once engaged his locker or 4x4 correctly and never knew it.

 

so he was using 4x2 the whole time.....

 

Offroading yes. such as exploring and trail riding. I would be hesitant for mudding though. It's fine if you plan on getting stuck in situations soully because you can't have any front end pull.

 

It works fine. In the sand, just lower your tire pressure and let the fun begin. Oh yeah, and take a tow rope just in case.

 

with some nitto terra grappers, and a heavy right foot 4x2 does great!!!!! havent gone mudding since my back surgery, but ive been quite a bit in my 5lug mini taco

 

He sure was. I believe he needs to take a trip to the dealer,doesn't sound like his actuator for the 4H works. He knows how to do it but the light blinks.

 

oh that sucks, if its blinking then it might need to be checked

 

in northern arizona, the desert sand and sometimes heavy rain that we get makes driving in the mud fun. I have a 4X2, I have gotten stuck a few times, but nothing to bad.

 

I must say having a 4wd, I do enjoy riding in 2wd for a bit, it allows you to play.
