i don’t get where you equate me taking my tailgate off every time to keep it safe is the same as someone stealing it. Because to avoid having literally anyone who wants it simply grab it all I have to do is lock it.

And you do realize that when unlocked the tailgate can be stolen by anyone, at any time. The process of stealing it is the process of opening it. However if locked there is some level of knowledge necessary to defeat the lock. This is like arguing that you should never lock your doors because someone can just defeat the lock anyways.

The advantage of having the dealer install it is that it will be part of your 3 year warranty if taken on delivery. Install it yourself and you get the 1 year Toyota warranty, so don’t reproach yourself.

Does that work the same way on a 6MT with the different keyless entry system?

Just tested with my 6MT. Without the tailgate lock it does relock as described. Unfortunately I haven't bought the mod yet.

I disabled the auto lock feature from the head unit, so my truck stays unlocked until I decide to lock it again.

And FYI for anyone wondering, the tailgate also unlocks with the door handle sensors, so if anyone doesn’t like the idea of having the fish the FOB out of their pocket when their hands are full, I just brush the door sensor with my elbow or whatever to unlock the tailgate without having to get the FOB out.

No regrets at all! The extremely rare times where I want the tailgate lock in a different state than the cab are easily outweighed by the convenience of using the fob instead of the key and knowing the tailgate's lock status at all times.

I recently moved my old tonneau over to my work Tacoma so I can put a new one tonneau on my own truck when it arrives, and I really find myself wishing the work truck had the powered lock. Doubly so over my personal truck since the work truck's key has to be in the ignition when running (no keyless entry) - so if I need to get into the bed while it's running, I have to power the truck off and remove the key to do so.

I have the pop n lock. No regrets. Easy install. Should have been a standard feature.

When it first came out I didn't think I'd like it so I never bothered. After having it for a year now I really like it.

The only drawback is when I unlock it with the fob to load things into the bed it won't clear the timer so the cab doors will lock if I haven't opened a door within 60 seconds.

Just turn the auto lock off in the settings in your head unit.

I just installed the remote tailgate lock today. It was an option I wanted but couldn’t get with my order. I also put in bed lights.

Only reason I got it is because I have a tonneau. auto locking tailgate + tonneau = locked bed. Less useful to have it easily lockable/unlockable if you don't have a tonneau to make it fully sealed.

Brand new on this forum and just picked up my 2016 yesterday. I've been reading through a bunch of threads and I want to put in the power tailgate lock module. I've unlocked my tailgate twice with the key and am tired of it already. Can anyone confirm or deny if this will work on a '16? I'm not new to modding vehicles but new to the Tacoma world. Thanks in advance!

It works, I installed it on my 2016 OR last year. You just need to make sure to order the right kit whether you have short or long wheelbase.

Seems pretty clear now, tailgate lock should be standard. At least there is an OEM plug and play solution. If there is ever a reason to leave the tailgate itself unlocked I will just use the key to override.

I hit my lock button 94 times the other day and the tailgate didn't lock? Something special you need to do to lock it with MT key?

Pop and lock kit wired to the passenger door lock wires in the passenger foot well panel. Have my setting to lock/unlock all doors with one press or proximity sensor. Love it, glad I did it , should have came like this.

    This...

My 2021 TRD Sport came without Tailgate Lock.

I bought the OEM component and appreciate the convenience.
