Pl won't hold if it's a flat piece of metal on rock. Not made for that. Having anchor bolts is great idea. We use them at work all the time when having too hold large wall forms. Bolts are ½" and bite nice and hard, would be a great addition to recovery gear. Few bolts and most of us already have an impact gun. Only need to carry an SDS drill. I'll bring it along next year to have on standby.

You know your really making me want to test this. For the thought experiment though. Let's say you found a spot to bond with 9mm gap max across a 10x10" square. There's plenty of materials strong adhesives that should be able to meet the sheer and tensile requirements for a say, 100sq.in plate. The plate would have a well textured surface for mechanical grip as well. Plate surface met be pre prepped. The rock may need some scaling, organics removal? Maybe a muriatic acid etch?

Sounds like an adhesives shootout next ardbeg trip.

Gents/ladies met a fellow tacoma enthusiast, from Toronto (tragically) but originally from South Africa, as well as her cap is.

Her name is Ilmarie (I think I'm butchering the spelling) so if she happens to pop her for a visit, welcome her and her husband!

Shes looking for trails to go on, and people to go with :)

Issue is those anchors are meant for concrete and not Rock. Depending on the type of rock might be more prone to just cracking.

I'm actually really curious to see now how any sort of concrete fasteners we both use at work would work in natural Canadian Shield Rock

Technically supposed to have a license to use these.

The strongest option still isn't much of a high capacity.

Drop in anchors would be my choice. Use them for pulling cable when mounting the tuggers.
10,000lbs pulling power on four 1/2" drop ins.

They are not fun with they let go though.

Replaced the lower heim bearing on the driver's side shock using Icon's service kit P/N 611067. The Spirolox retaining rings came out easy with just a pocket screwdriver. I used a ball joint press with a couple of sockets. Putting the old bearing and bushings next to the new ones, the bushing shank that broke off inside the bearing is clearly visible:

Also replaced the upper ball joint boot using SPC kit 25477. The boots on both sides developed a tear where they contacted the coil at full droop. I will do the passenger side boot tomorrow.

Those of you with spindle gussets and ball joint UCAs, what puller do you use to separate the upper ball joint from the spindle? The pitman arm puller I used previously no longer fits with the gussets. @tacoma16 @Norilsk ?

Everyone change the fuck out your uniball bearings if they’ve been installed for over 12 months :boink::bananadead::evil::popcorn:

Hammer and chisel for me if there is a need to separate spindle from UCA.

I'm curious too. It would depend on the drilling and if you could get nice hole in the rock. Like you said, it would be prone to cracking over concrete.

As a climber I've been curious about this for a while, I've seen videos around with anchors into rock on 4wd climbs. The granite up in Ardbeg is really strong and dense rock, so would likely give you a full strength anchor, so long as you chose a good location without cracks. The standard procedure in climbing is to inspect the rock visually as well as hammer on it and listen to avoid anything hollow sounding.

3/8" is the standard for rock climbing and is rated for over 5000lbs mbs (minimum breaking strength) in shear, which is how we'd load it. The norm is to tie and anchor into at least two bolts, equalizing the load and adding redundancy. A 1/2" stainless bolt would get you up to 8500 lbs. Two of those with an equalized anchor could be reasonable.

It wouldn't surprise me that a 10" x 10" plate epoxied to the rock would hold under perfect prep, but you might not always get a perfect location, prep, bond, and if it let go you'd have a pretty serious projectile.
