I was driving home from work one morning (I work midnights) in my 2005 Scion tc. It may have been while going under a bridge but I don't exactly remember. I heard a loud "BANG" and the road noise got louder, and it slowly got more chilly inside the car. I couldn't quite figure it out but then realized what it was. Drove straight to the dealer since it had just opened and I was on my way home. It was my only vehicle so I didn't have much choice. I could see where a rock caught the very edge of the glass and caused it to shatter. I never found the rock that caused it, but I didn't look. The dealer repaired and cleaned it up while I went home to sleep (had to work again that night).

On the 9th gen Civic Si the rear window unexpectedly shattering was not entirely unheard of. I never found out the actual cause but one theory was that it was caused by panel misalignment putting stress on the glass.
Apples to oranges but seemed relavant to mention.

So, I have a 2016 tacoma and the sunroof just blew out on me today. I checked on this site to see even there were any other instances of this. Driving at 100km per/hr on the highway, the cover open but the sunroof closed then a huge bang like a gunshot and both my wife and I wondered what the hell and I pulled over. We realized that the sunroof had blownout. We were covered by small slivers of glass but most of the actual glass pieces had blown outwards and were in the bed of my truck and on the highway. No oncoming traffic or traffic in front on us. Stopped at the Toyota dealer 15 minutes later andd got “well it must of been a rock”, so insurance should cover it. I call bullshit. The glass is blown outwards, totally bizarre

Were you driving with the windows rolled down?

All I can add is that my dad was getting new tires one time and they jacked his car up and cracked the windshield and the tire shop covered the repair . The body being twisted a little caused his and I don't know what else would make glass break on its own .

Sounds like some crazy bad luck too...I mean the average person would only be lifting one for er at a time to change tires.

I would just call your insurance company. If it blew out while driving it was from the heat and a minor defect in the glass that had combined at just the right (or wrong) time.

A car body has to twist an extreme amount for glass to break. I have seen cars missing 1/2 the front and the glass is fine. The sunroof is not fixed to the body. The car that had the glass broken by being jacked up, the shop broke it some other way but said that is how it broke to save face.

An incoming airliner on McCarren’s approach apparently had a passenger in the water closet who dropped you a deuce during a low-level flush. Dude seriously needs a little stool softener- just saying.

To save weight manufacturers use much thinner glass. Probably a tiny scratch from something like a rock and that's all it took. When you factor in vehicle flex...voila, sorry buddy.

LOL it took me a while to see that this was a gravedig. I got through the first page and a half before I noticed the date.

Anyhow, I kinda figure that people are looking for a pattern that doesn't exist. There's something close to 300 million registered autos in this country. I imagine a sunroof is shattering every day, somewhere... And I also bet plenty of of those folk don't understand why it happened. I'm not shit-talkin or disagreeing with anyone, but the road is busy place, and lots of things are happening and debris could be everywhere or anywhere. To instantly go to some kind of mythbusters, CSI, true-crime explanation seems a little... a little... ummm, extreme.

"well um if the atmospheric conditions are right and the body flexes exactly so, and the sun is high in the sky, and your girl is in the passenger seat in a pink dress on Wednesday, then..."

Even a grain of sand can score it...since the glass is so thin, doesn't take much. A coworker of mine, his parked Buick blew the sunroof window...the thing was parked for hours...things ain't made like before...

I was on a forest road and thought I heard a rock land on my roof. Drove another 1/2 hour or so to the campsite. Stood on the picnic table to survey the land. Found the rock still sitting on the roof. No glass on the top of this truck though.

I use my grandfathers cyclops nail puller circa 1920s cast in CT regularly and with great torque all the time. Came with a large bin of American made screws that you can torque until your wrists break before they do. Compared to the Home Depot China made smegma laden crap we HAVE to buy now I really am not surprised buildings are falling down while people sleep.
