:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Gals! Got some extra sleep this AM! Nothing on the agenda except for spray some Round Up, watch the F1 race and football, and make a lasagna.

Be well Tom! YAY Roof! Seems the longer things take, the longer you have to worry about them!

Glad I went to the clinic. I have a mild case of Bronchitis. Caught is early so I am on antibiotics with a follow up check in the near future. Tested negative for Covid 19. The X-Ray doc will look at my chest X-Rays and if they are diagnosed as worse than I will get a call Monday or Tuesday.

Only took the roofers 3 hours total from the time they arrived until they where all packed up to go.
    And I have a roof!
    Ridge vent.

This view out my kitchen window makes me very happy.

I still have to install the soffit vents, but not today. I'm taking it easy the rest of the day, gonna get some dinner and rest up before the work week.
We're supposed to get an inch or 2 of rain tonight so that'll wash the roof down good.
They only charged me $300 and that included the synthetic tar paper and more starter strip, they went all the way around with the starter strip, very fair in my opinion.
Next summer when I paint the garage I'm going to paint the white drip edge blue, I don't like the way it sticks out.

I built my 18x24 solo. I marked truss locations out, placed the truss "upside-down" sitting on the top joist. Nailed support (18.5" long) sticking out from the rafter. Spacer on the top plate, then used a long 2x4 to flip the rafter in place. Those 18.5" boards being used as top spacers, top of the wall had another spacer. So once flipped, the four boards spaced it out. The last two or three rafters then stacked against the rest already in place (otherwise not enough room to flip up) and walked into position.

That was 20 years ago (I was younger). Kids were too young to do much lifting then, but 18' was my limit (20 ft wide, 12" on both sides). I flipped all in place but went back to taps walls into place and even rafters before attaching them.

It's been long enough, but I seem to remember muttering to myself "never again" and forgetting most of my mistakes. Flipped up with those "T" pieces sticking out was genius from my Dad and Sister (who built her own 1500 sq ft 3 bedroom home around 1980).

I did sketch up a "boom" to bolt to the front of my old land cruiser. The idea was a winch with a 16' tripod boom to help lift and place the rafters but skipped building a boom as it was faster to do it by hand.

That's a great story. I'd have liked to see your truss setting in action and would have pitched in.

My trusses are too heavy for me to get them up solo. I had to lift one end and drag them from where the delivery truck dumped them and I know how heavy they are. I've been thinking quite a bit about some kind of hoist arrangement. The rental place wants outrageous prices just to deliver anything that would help... and then there is the rental fee. I've often built or bought something to avoid rental fees.

I used to work for a rental place and there was a formula they used to set prices having to do with the cost of the equipment and the expected life. Most tools were paid for pretty fast. The place here is paying for their's in about half the time, I think.

I'm getting gravel delivered this next week so will be spreading that by hand... and thinking about the damn trusses. I'll figure it out.

The metal for the roof and siding is supposed to be here soon, too. I'm wondering if it is on one of those ships off the coast of California that haven't been unloaded.

One step at a time. Thanks for the comment.

I asked for a "tailgate spread" and arrived to find a Volkswagen Beetle size pile of gravel at one end of an 85 foot driveway -- the wrong end to boot...

Never let it be said the gravel delivery guys don't have a sense of humor. << gravel guy

LOL... the gravel place here has a minimum of 14 tons they will deliver. I figure about half would do what I need for the building. I asked if they could dump half in the building and half in the driveway and the girl got real silent. After a significant hesitation she said they could try... but no guarantees. She didn't sound confident at all. There is a lot of that kind of thing here.

On one hand I see their point -- customers frequently seem to want the almost impossible done - very neatly, which is tough with a 45,000 pound truck.

On the other hand, the driveway was a straight 85 feet long -- the driver of said truck couldn't do just a little bit better than a pile -- and he calls himself a driver... :smack:

That's why they put a chain on the tailgate of a dump truck to control the speed and quantity of the material being dumped. I don't drive a dump truck... but even I could do it.

My thoughts exactly -- but unfortunately it requires caring just a little bit -- not so much in vogue anymore it seems.

What is it with gravel anyway. The last time — literally because it’s paved now — we bought gravel the truck showed up and immediately the guy was belligerent about dumping it slowly down the length of the driveway. I told him fine, go back home with your truck and your @#$&*(‘! load. Suddenly he was all smiles and very cooperative. Strange sense of humor I guess.

I spent the better part of the day today rearranging my closet. :anonymous: No, really, it was a lot of work! There were heavy cabinets involved. I managed to rid myself of one chest of drawers plus two full trash bags worth of clothes; one to the dump and one to the charity bin. As a male I see that as a victory.

    Good morning everyone!!!

The contractor replacing the bridge on the road that passes through our property is supposed to start work today - detour signs were dropped off on Thursday. What are the odds they'll actually start?

Actually start today...yeah, probably but who knows what will get accomplished.

The reason I say that is I see way too much road work with way too many workers not doing anything.

    The garage looks fantastic.

The Health Clinic called back late yesterday afternoon. I have Pneumonia in the right lung. I am so glad I went and had this checked out quickly.

I did manage to get some sleep last night. Used up 1/2 box to tissue paper blowing my nose and coughing up phlegm. The antibiotics are doing their job. I have to reschedule my cardiologist appointment from this Thursday to a later date. I also need to schedule another chest X-ray for 3 weeks from now. I have been a lot sicker but I was also a lot younger. I actually feel pretty good. No sore throat or headache.

:pccoffee:Good Morning Porch People! :hattip:Think I'm going to avoid overheating if we're gonna set a record high. Run some errands and find some Putz. There's always Putz around here. Actually a good race at COTA, especially for F1. Amazing how technical it gets, and precise! "You have 3 laps to the win", and darn if it didn't come to that. And a back marker meant Max got the DRL open, not Lewis. And that was that!

I've given up on my big plans for winter prep, but we're supposed to NOT have a serious one. Can't get contractors interested in not huge projects, much less out here in Lockhart. You'd think we're 100 miles from anything. Going to go get the foam board insulation for the greenhouse I think today; get ready to put it up later in the week so I'll be done. The old electric oil heater from the sunroom will move out there, replacing a 1500W box, and I upgraded the sunroom to a new model. Other than fabbing up a couple hose pipe covers, I'll be done with getting ready come November.

We should take odds on your bridge Mark!
Glad you're doing OK Tom - and glad you caught it quick too.
Roof does look great Greg - maybe the white will grow on you.

I've helped put a few trusses up. Wasn't my idea of fun - but we did recruit enuff troops to get'em in place and flip'em up. Cowboys and hilligans will do this for free beer! We totted(?) them in, hung on the frame and stood them with poles. Took a plan and enough bodies.
(Helpful hint: Just be sure the beer arrives a bit later)

All pretty true! All that tech isn't my idea of drivers competing, but it was amazing how they had it all planned to work, down to the specific lap, and then some guy that wouldn't get out of the way shoots it all to heck.
But COTA is a great track, and like 15 minutes from me. It's the only one I watch. NASCAR has to learn that fall is football season too. Lifelong fan, and I only watch 3-4 races now. I'm kind of looking forward seeing the new car next year.
