For those prices, that's getting into custom bumper with swingout territory. I feel like Bash Fab could do one for a little more money. But the ability to switch from car to car is a good feature too. Especially considering how often @Bubbles switches cars.

yeah the transferability is the best part for sure

i wish the gx stock spare tire location could hold a bigger tire. i could fit a 33" easy on my 2nd gen tacoma. the gx can barely fir the stock size

on the 470 as long as you dont have KDSS you can make a 33" fit. 460 is a big no no across the board, but I agree. Its a downside of the platform for sure. I wish they would just do the prado rear door as an option so its on there.

If anyone can find a Prado door from outside the US, and wants to buy it, I can import it for you. It’s kinda what I do.

that would be cool too. not sure it's worth the cost/hassle (although i have no idea how much a prado door costs or how hard it is to get one) haha

i'm just lazy and cheap. i'll just end up throwing my spare in the trunk

I don’t have another vehicle that I would need to transfer a hitch based tire carrier to, so I’ll just go the full bumper route.

Bash made me a tire carrier that attaches to the 3rd row seat mount. It's perfect for me. It does take up trunk space but not an issue for me, no kids and everything.

I have had the spare in the boot for over 2 years now and I have 2 little kids. Problem with the hitch mount rack is that the factory hitch is already too low. I would be hitting the tire carrier on everything and eventually just have part of a carrier laying on the ground with my spare.

I was hitting the RIGd swing out when backing up from a muddy hill. I definitely see the pros but for me I like having my backup camera and clearance.

I took it off this weekend for a trip to the cabin.

I ordered 35s so spare might have to go back on the RIGd or on the roof haha

Definitely don’t put it on the roof. Here is how I did mine for the time being.

I seen lifestyle overland carry up top for a few trips that’s why I figured it was good but I like this method better. Thanks

I've smacked my hitch a few times at URE, hard enough to make the dash cam record a collision.
The factory hitch is definitely too low but then again, it acts as armor. The spare on the roof deal I'm not sure about. The last thing I want to do in case of a flat is haul 60ish lbs off my roof.

Maybe I'll get with Bash after the first of the year to see about a non swing out high rise rear bumper.

Did I look through all 129 pages of this thread over the last few days? No way, only a GX-obsessed lunatic would do that. *Cough*

Looking at buying a GX460. I've had already three 4Runners and am ready for a change, so the appeal of the V8 and luxury niceties have me dreaming of being a fancy off-roader. I'm looking in the ~$35k range which seems to be either low-mileage 2012-2014s, or 40-80k mile 2014-2017s. Only "needs" are heated seats and KDSS (which I understand is standard on all GX460s), and no Ecru interior. There's some decent options out there.

The catch is that I have a set of 285/70/17s Toyo AT3s that need to be installed pretty quickly after I buy a GX. Have an obligation to review them and need to have them on the rig as soon as possible. I've done extensive reading about the trims and different suspension options in coils vs air bags. My understanding is that the base or mid-level trims are best for lifting as there's no need to eliminate the air suspension. Is this right? I only see ~2-2.5" of lift in my future, really only the minimum needed to fit the 285s without rubbing. Really like the comfort afforded by the air suspension-equipped GXs I've driven but not sure if it's worth the hassle. Is there a way to get 285s to fit while retaining the bags? Narrowing down the search to non-Luxury trims removes quite a lot of options.

I do intend on wheeling whatever GX I end buying, both at places like AOAA as well as the unmaintained roads up north in NH so armor and so on will be in the cards sometime early in '22. Some of us are planning a trip to Utah for next fall and I'm looking forward to be being comfortable on the drive from CT out there as well as on the trails.

Is there anything else I should watch out for in going into purchasing one? I've read just about every GX thread on here and perused IH8Mud as well.

Thanks for the help. Looking forward to being part of the GX club.

    Hi Ross,

I also came from 4runners and two Tacomas and was looking for something with a V8 and some comfort. I picked up a 2012 with 115k miles on it for around $22k late last year.

One thing to remember with the GX, in case you care, is that you need to run premium and these things get shit mileage. I personally don't mind, but I am getting ~13.5mpg on 33"s tall skinny tires.

With that out of the way - everything else about the 460 is awesome. I have no regrets. I have a mild 2.5" lift, sliders, skid plates, some aftermarket recovery points, and tall skinny 33s and it does great offroad.

I avoided 14+ because I don't like the facelift. I avoided the airbags because I knew i'd be replacing with aftermarket lift. I have heard airbag delete is not too difficult.

All 460s have KDSS. All 460s have ATRAC. There is no ATRAC button, but under a certain very slow speed in 4lo it will kick in.

These things are known to leak coolant - check around the engine bay for any coolant leaks. Depending on where you are, check for rust, etc. I personally looked for one that had been serviced at a Lexus dealer through it's life.

285s should fit with no lift, but you will rub on the plastics in the wheel well and you will rub on the steps. Take the steps off and push the plastic back and it will be tight, but you should fit (depending on wheel offset)

Find one with heated and cooled seats and you will be living in luxury.
