Ok so Im going to AZ with my fiancee in June I think it is, to meet her family. Not worried about that, the part that makes me want to pee is the fact I'll be in the air for 4 hours.....

I have NO PROBLEM running into a burning building but getting on a plan makes me want to cry lol.

    So any tips?

I have flown before multiple times, but ugh it freaks me out so bad and I have not been on a flight for over a hour which makes me even more nervous.

    So any advice/thoughts?

I was going to drive the taco but it would be as much gas $ to drive there as it would be to fly and it wouldn't take 1 day and 4 hours haha!

    Thanks in advance!!

You are an order of magnitude more likely to get killed driving your Taco to the airport than flying. So if you made it to the airport in one piece, statistically you are going to land in one piece as well.

Is taking Greyhound or Amtrak an option? Time difference compared to flying may not be that much given all the delays from airport security. In Europe and China, train service has been known to drive smaller regional airlines to closure.

    Didn't think of that.

yeah I know I have read the statistics and what not I know when our time is up its over and Im ok with that but I dont know it just makes me scared lol.

I know is something goes wrong it is usually while getting to flying altitude or coming down, while your just going at (whatever elevation it is) your pretty much good. It sucks when you hit those air pockets though, and the plane drops 1-3ft...

I fly often, I always have noise canceling head phones and I stay up as late as possible the night before so hopefully I can sleep on the plane! (my trips are 8 hours).
Bring a laptop so you can watch a movie or read so you don't get that bored

I actually like to fly, nothing to worry about. I take my ipod, my wife takes hers too. We flew to Vegas a few months ago. That was a little over 4 hours and was not bad. I smoke too, so for me to say its not bad, its not. Its over before you know it. Buy some of your favorite magazones too. I would suggest to get them at a local store, cause they are expensive at the airport.

I have two issues with flying.
    1) The airport itself including the delays and such
    2) just not comfortable in the seats. People tend to be rude and take up more than their share of the seat and arm rest.
I take up enough space of my own.
I have had my knee almost shattered by the drink cart because I fell asleep and they ran it down the isles like a battering ram. We have a rule 8 hours or under it is just as fast and cheaper for us to drive.
Make sure you have plenty of things to keep your mind off of the flight, books games on your phone or similar device, magazines etc.

Its not that bad. I Fly a few times a year for work, once you do it more often you get used to it. My dad flies every week sometimes 4-6 plane rides in a week.

I'm not big on flying either. Flew to LA back in 2002 from New Orleans. We stopped in Dallas so that broke the flight up a little bit. I think we were in the air for four hours as well, I really cant remember. I just got a magazine and read nonstop. Anything to keep your mind off of what you are doing. That helped me anyway. You will be fine. :)

Or have a few drinks at the bar before you get on the flight. It makes everything more fun :D

i hate flying, i hate everything about it. i hate going through security and i hate being on a plane. but that being said i fly all the time. i have flown to the uk twice from las vegas in the last 2 months. last year i deployed from las vegas to afghanistan, that trip involves about 16 hours of flying. i may not like it but it is a part of life. i would still choose to fly before i drove though, i guess i just bite the bullet and do it. oh and i forgot to mention for the last 2 years i was a flying crew chief in the air force.

x2 I do quite a bit of flying. I would recommend if you get motion sick or just don't like to be cramped (I can be in a smoke filled room with 100lbs of gear on and not have an issue but have issues being in a car or plane too long) I usually take a Dramamine a few hours before the flight and If I know it will be really long, I take a tylonol PM on the plane when I want to sleep. Otherwise, I just plug my iPod in and make sure I get an aisle seat. It really is not too bad.

    good tips!
I use to have to fly a lot for my job & fight it the whole time.
A friend told me honestly what's gonna happen is gonna happen. You don't have as much control as you think I do.
Since then flying was/is no problem.
I don't have to like it but I had to do it so acceptance made it much easier & I used some of the little tricks mntbiker suggested.
It also made the trip much more enjoyable..weird how that happened.
Hope you & your fiance have an awesome trip!
Would gladly jump on a plane today to escape these cold temps!

Thanks guys, with all the help I have from you guys think I will manage it.

My family makes fun of me, I'll run into a building that could have flames out the front door and not think twice but I'm scared to death of getting on a plane. (they all like to fly I'm the black sheep)

I'm going to take the Valium (with me), just in case but I'm pretty sure between my Ipod and reading, or sleeping I should be able to do it.

    Thanks again guys!

I used to fly a couple times a year to visit my family when I lived on the west coast. Now I fly a couple times a year for work. Catch is that now the flights are mostly international and usually involve a flight from the US to Tokyo which is around 10-12 hours. Oh and sometimes I don't know I'm going until the day before.

I do get anxiety about it from time to time mainly due to the stress of the situation. Dramamine (original formula) helps me sleep and keeps me from getting motion sick, which isn't a big deal for me on airplanes anymore. Another thing I'll take sometimes is melatonin. You can find it at GNC or your pharmacy with the vitamins and supplements. It helps promote sleep and is naturally occurring in the body so it's not like taking heavy drugs. I've seen it in 1, 3, and 5 mg doses. 3 mg is plenty for me to sleep all night at home. 1 mg is good to help relax and maybe catch a few zzz's. I mainly use it when I want to sleep on a long flight, recovering from jetlag, and if I can't sleep at home. Might be an alternative to Valium, but it's up to you. I've never taken Valium so I can't really compare the two.

Good luck on your trip. Domestic flights typically have no entertainment (movies) and very little food service anymore. Plan ahead and bring your own snacks and entertainment.

^ Thanks will do that melatonine stuff you said my fiancee takes it to sleep sometimes.

When I get called out its hard for her to go back to sleep and she got that and sleeps like a baby now.
