Cam gears for V6. Add power AND mpg

I definitely noticed the difference - the cam gear benefits allowed the trans to hold a gear higher with a slight rpm increase on slight inclines VS. it would normally drop a gear and jump up to 3000+ !

Also recommend @greenEFSI to anyone in socal for install services !

 

Got my gears today. Originally planned to install them tonight but need to push it off until tomorrow. Really stoked to get them installed.

 

Got them installed this afternoon on my FJ. Only took me 3.5 hours start to finish. Like others have said, those cam sprocket bolts are TIGHT! Managed to break a serpentine belt tool and had to resort to double wrenching it for more leverage which worked. One thing that made me laugh is that 3 out of 4 marked links lined up without even trying. Hard to tell yet if I picked up any power or not. I unhooked the battery to reset adaptations and only took a short drive. Should be able the give a better assessment over the next few days.

 

Had mine installed yesterday by @greenEFSI and he did a great job. Thanks Gio!! Mine was a little more complicated with the supercharger in the way too, but he knocked it out in 5 hours flat. I immediately noticed the engine running smoother, and noticeably more pep in the lower gears. More zippy now, feels like it did before I added the 33's. Also noticed the shifting was a little smoother. For some reason my truck sometimes doesn’t want to downshift on the freeway when I think it should, so hoping the gears fixes this as well. So far happy with the mod, but time will tell how happy I am long term. looking forward to better gas milage, but with the SC, I'm doubting that will happen. Just too much fun!

Took a 1,000 mile road trip over the weekend and am blown away by these cam sprockets. Like others have mentioned, I noticed that going down the freeway, it holds higher gears much longer before downshifting on hills. My FJ is a 2007 with 35" tires, front and rear steel bumpers, skid plates, sliders, 4.56 gears, etc. Before, with the slightest hills at highway speeds it would always downshift. I was amazed how it held 5th gear for so long on multiple hills without downshifting. In regards to fuel mileage, I typically average 12.5 MPG consistently both city and highway. After installing the sprockets, on the drive down, I averaged around 13.8 MPG. Coming home I was pushing it a lot harder and got low 13 mpg for several tanks. Overall I am very pleased with this upgrade and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Does anyone ever get a P0022 code? I got one and then cleared it and haven't seen it since. Been about 100 miles since. I was looking into needing to clean a couple of filters that get gunked up over time. Just seeing if anyone else has any experience.

Edit: Posted here since I have the cam gears installed and this has happened since getting the gears in.

 

Wondering if anyone decided to replace the timing chain while you were changing out the cam? I've got 265K on my 2006, debating if I should go ahead and change our the chains if I'm already going to have it torn down this far... Thoughts?

 

You should open the tensioner window and see if the chain has stretched enough to require a replacement. Think of the cam gear install as a glorified valve cover job. Adding a chain swap to the mix would require much more work.

 

When doing cam gears you don’t pull things apart nearly enough to just do a timing chain while you’re in there. Quite a bit more disassembly required to get to the chain.

like @greenEFSI said it’s basically a valve cover job plus one more step swapping the gears.

This right here. Still a whole lot more work to get the front timing chain cover off. Literally, pulling the valve covers is maybe 25% of the job to change the timing chains.

I can help you if you come to my place. It’s not really a 4 person job. Not enough room and with to many hands something could get missed going back together. Order up you gears and gaskets. Once you have everything we can figure out when.
