@Gwyns04's 2010 Subaru Forester was not properly maintained by the previous owner and the engine failed in a most spectacular fashion at less than 120K miles; My trusted mechanic Pete put a used engine in the car, and Gwyn's teenage son wanted the thoroughly destroyed engine it replaced, so he can tinker with it. Pete had no problem with him taking the old engine, and I stopped by his shop to pick up it up this morning; Gonna drop it off at Gwyn's after work!

    How exactly did it fail?

I honestly forget, but here's how the story begins...

Gwyn totaled her 2013 Subaru Outback; She wanted another Subaru, and bought this 2010 Forester on impulse because it was only $8,000. I would have taken one look at the car and told her to walk, but I was not informed of this purchase until several days after she bought it. She had to sign a "no return" contract at the shady buy here pay here lot where bought the car.

Two weeks after she bought it, a ton of warning lights came on, the car overheated, and the engine promptly died while she was driving. It was either the timing belt or the head gasket that went (Again, I forget which, but head gaskets and timing belts are common things to fail at about 120K miles in these cars). The engine overheated so severely that the radiator melted!

Your employer should be compensating you for the use of your truck to haul for work.

At least standard rate for mileage.

For a round trip of four miles to haul garbage and recycling? Nah...

Also, the engine is my cargo, getting delivered to my friend's house after work :)

Also, 99% of the people I haul stuff for are either family members, or friends I owe a favor...

My friend and neighbor Ryan installed my stereo and backup camera basically for free, so when he needed me and my truck to get his new lawnmower I wa a happy to oblige...

My neighbor Drew lets me drink his beer and once let me use his snowblower, so I had no problem helping him return a large piece of patio furniture to Target for free when it wouldn't fit in his Explorer.

2 or 3 times a week, and often interspersed with me bullshitting with coworkers on slow days; I'm not pushing the issue...

I make $17 per hour, and I also have a 401K and paid vacations; I put so many miles on this truck for personal use that I honestly don't give a shit anymore. If it were a newer truck that wasn't paid off, the I might ask for compensation.

    Your choice.

But 4 miles each day quickly builds to nearly 100 miles each week, assuming you haul 5 days/week. Fuel is not cheap, neither is maintenance.

I understand the engine is your cargo. Although, the trash bags are for your employer.

Frankly, I'd urge the employer to pay for mileage, rent a dumpster or hire a trash service. Then if he refuses, then I' quit hauling rubbish for the employer.

Honestly, the employer is taking advantage of your nature.
