Good point. I know several who have the red dots and I think they are all using the holosun (after watching that dude on YouTube). I'm not set on getting one with the optic ready slide. I just kind of figured it would be nice to have the option. As of right now, I'm very strongly leaning toward the M&P2.0 compact with the threaded barrel and just forgetting about the red dot.

According to current timelines, I have about 10 months remaining to decide.

I have the 507 with a green dot. Got it on sale for $200 I think. Love it. If we ever get our GA meet and greet shoot together you can definitely try it out!
It does take time to get use to it and is definitely a learning curve but it works!

Why the need for the threaded barrel? Planning on shooting suppressed in the future? If that's the case, and a Red dot may be in the future also, it's much easier to have an optics ready gun to add a red dot and treaded barrel than it is to have a gun that came with a treaded barrel but have to mill later for a red dot. So if you even think you may want a red dot in the future, the optics ready slide will be better b/c add a threaded barrel is no problem down the line.

Red dots are cool. My buddy had one and it was like cheating.

So I got a holosun and it is pretty cool, but at this point it is basically a range toy.

It takes a decent amount of time / training rounds fired to condition yourself to acquire and use the red dot.
Ive got a lot of trigger time on the platform but I am going to need a lot more time training on the red dot until I get to the point where I am comfortable carrying it. YMMV

Also keep in mind you are going to need a different holster.

Ahhhh well done. Then threaded barrel is must. But Again, with almost any gun you pic it will be much easier to find a threaded barrel to drop in rather than shipping off your slide to be milled. Do the m&p options you're looking at come with suppressor height sights?

I went to the range with a bunch of guys from my church. The guys with red dots had significantly tighter groupings than those of us with iron sights.

I am very confident in my ability to hit my target with iron sights, but seeing the difference was mind blowing. In the even that it is ever "needed" in a safety situation, I like the idea of improving accuracy. You can practice at the range all day, but you can never quite simulate the stress of an active shooter or home invasion type situation.

Yes. If I get a new gun, I'd need a new holster anyway, so that is less of a consideration.

Agreed. Even forking out $200+ for a good aftermarket option is cheaper than having the slide milled. Both variants in the M&P2.0 that I'm looking at have co-witness sights. I just wish they offered the configuration with both. I don't understand why it is an either/or situation.

Then I tell myself to get the one that has both, but also has all the extra crap that I don't care about (boot knife, challenge coin, etc.). If the Crimson Trace CTS-1500 was good, it would be easier to spend the money on it. I know I could sell it, but would rather just get the right one to begin with. Everyone I've talked to says that the Crimson Trace red dot is garbage.

Yesterday I started thinking that maybe I should just skip the new handgun idea and get an AR9 pistol. That'd be more fun to shoot anyway.

Again, I have 10 months to figure it out. That along with the fact that I just paid for the suppressor, tax stamp, transfer and trust....the money isn't burning a hole in my pocket. I figure I have time to get the right gun at the right price. Absolute worst case scenario, it goes on my 300 AAC or I buy a drop-in barrel for something I already own.

My ar9 is my favorite gun to take to the range. In the mean time I'll keep my eye out for an m&p with an optics cut. Threaded barrel will be a plus. I search the classifieds all day and it's more fun to help others spend money so I think I'll be able to find you exactly what your looking for for well under 1k (excluding the cost of the red dot).

A few days late to the conversations but I’m a fan of red dots and threaded barrels on pistols. Gives you some flexibility and the learning curve going from irons to red dot doesn’t take long at all.

Stopped by BassPro on the way home from work yesterday. They had the Walther PPQ and FN509 in stock along with a few others. I liked the way both of them felt.

I did not care as much for the HK VP9. I've read some reviews on both the Walther and FN that make me want to find them for rent at a range. Sort of a "love 'em, or you don't" kind of gun....which I suppose is true of every gun.

Edit: they even had an FN509 with the Vortex red dot for $100 more than the one without. Seems like an obvious choice considering the red dot retails for closer to 300.

I would definitely not value that RD at $300 but if you like it and know you want to run the vortex over the holosun or rmr, then yeah the extra $100 is worth it. Even if you want to run something else, selling the vortex and plate for more than the extra $100 should be pretty easy to do and put those funds towards what RD you want to run.

I'm not too familiar with the ppq now. Does it have a side push button mag release or a trigger guard mag release. I can't stand the trigger guard mag releases.

Edit: vortex customer service and no questions asked warranty is also no joke. They are legit to deal with.

    Good to know.

As stated before, I'm not necessarily in a huge rush....other than I've got the bug. Yesterday was the first day that I've been at my office in quite a while and Bass Pro is about halfway between work and home. So I figured I'd stop in just to see what they have and also see if I could find some primer or powder (which online said they had in limited stock), but it was all gone by the time I got there.

I had sort of ruled out the FN as someone had said it was a niche gun. That, along with the cost, had me back to the M&P 2.0C. However, if I get the M&P2.0C with the optics ready slide and then get a barrel ($110 for the Spinta) plus a red dot (we'll just say $250), then I'm looking at a total cost of $900+ anyway.

I have made at least one decision though. I'm going to get a family membership to the range near my house. I think they do discounted rentals for members, but moreso than that is the ability to shoot more frequently. While I'm not a bad shot, practice is never a bad thing. It'll be nice to try them out and get to shoot more regularly.

If you liked the PPQ, try to check out the Walther PDP also. Updated version of the PPQ and meets your want for optics ready. As I indicated above, be aware if you buy the bass pro/cabela's FN 509t with vortex viper, you can't adjust the viper while its on the gun as it has locking screws covered by the rear sites. Was annoying to zero. Mine that I got from cabela's also didn't come with any additional mounting plates and the rmr/holosun adapter has been sold out for months. Broke down and bought a $70 aftermarket one for a holosun 507c. I love how the FN shoots though.

I have a PPQM1 with the mag release on the trigger guard that I love to shoot. It has the smoothest factory trigger that I or anyone else that has shot it has ever felt. I personally don't mind the mag release but chances are most of them you will find today will be the M2 version with a traditional button release.

That being said, I am a big fan of most FN pistols and really like the looks of the 509, my next pistol purchase is probably going to be between that and a CZ P-10 or P-07 being as they are all available with a threaded barrel

    PM'd @MAG GRY TACO15

The PPQ I looked at yesterday was optics ready.

I noticed the set screws on the viper were covered by the rear sights. So I'm guessing you'd have to remove the RD, loosen the screws, reattach and zero, then remove the RD again to tighten the set screws. That does seem like a lot of work and potential to "lose zero" when reinstalling it the second time. I've seen some really good reviews on the Viper, so it is in consideration.

I haven't found a CZ in stock anywhere to hold. Granted, I've only looked at 2 or 3 shops locally. I'm going to be interested to see what the range has for rent.
