From trampolines to this. IIRC, the Russians were charging ~90M for a Soyuz seat, while SpaceX is charging ~55M for a Crew Dragon seat. Wonder what the internal cost for running a Soyuz launch was.

Something I never thought of before. Were the shuttles just, essentially, super complex gliders? Or did they have engines?

No engines on return. A big rock with stubby wings.

Rocket going up (3 main shuttle engines fed by the big ass external tank and 2 orbital maneuvering engines) and like @Lurkin said, glider all the way to landing.

The currently-under-perpetual-development Dream Chaser is a vehicle intended to launch on a Vulcan rocket and then glide back too. The Europeans are working on something similar.

Reminds me a little bit of the VentureStar X-33 concept Lockheed had back in the 90s. Used to read about it in Popular Science when I was a kid..

that was one thing that always amazed me about the shuttle program. How something that size could re-enter the atmosphere and glide to landing was exceptional.

It could be that China's spaceplanes aren't really of Chinese design. That said, I could swear I just heard something about China orbiting the globe with a nuclear powered space glider the other day...

ABC News is calling it a ‘Sputnik’ type event.
