What are yall doing for off grid coffee?

Oh I’m just josh’in around with my crackling dry humor and love of mispellings.

My dad had a percolator, used the same one from as early as I can remember until he passed. Used it every day. Still have it.

Best is a poor man's mocha.

Simple pour over (I've seen nothing simpler in this thread, with the exception of boiled grounds and instant)
One spoon of high grade organic cocoa powder (easy to carry)
One slug of coconut CREAM from a small carton
Sweeten to taste, sweetener of your choice

Yeah, kid choco, but coffee and you are living rich while glamping.

That reminds me of my favorite coffee in the Military which was what we called Foxhole coffee

Inside our packages of Military Crats was a package of instant coffee , instant cocoa , powdered creamer and packets of sugar

Mix it all together and tasted awesome , was my favorite everytime I was out in the field during training

 

We did variants of the same at work. Even used like 4 of those little liquid Coffee Mate chocolate creamers (which are already sweet).

I recently got one like this after using my Aeropress for many years. Love the Aeropress. It will make any coffee better getting compressed through it and also makes a good espresso. I use the upside-down method. Clean up is easy. The reason for the French press was easier to make more cups at a time, 1 liter, and it being insulated is a must in the winter. I also want to be able to keep it hot by just placing it on the stove for a bit too. Clean up is a little pain but they make large filters I may try later.

 

Also, it is said that drip or pour over methods are best uses with your light roasts. I drink mostly dark roasts.

 

Depends on the trip. I use an aeropress for backpacking/lightweight stuff. If we're hard car camping we go french press.

 

Maybe true.

I pretty much only drink sweet single origin Brasil beans, with a light medium roast (skins/fruit still present). Some of you, and my relatives, end up wanting Charbux French Roast after my coffee

I have half a dozen SS percs of different sizes collected over the years. Some for fire some for camp stoves others for home use. How a man is supposed to go kill game before having coffee from the perc and scrapple is beyond me.



About a dozen years ago finally broke down and got a propane Coleman. But my 40+ year white gas Coleman still works fine. Although carry a spare generator in it with candle wax melted on the ends to keep spiders from building webs in it.

MY parents and grandparents used a Corning Ware blue cornflower perc in the 60's and and what I started drinking coffee out of in the 70's. When they brought back the blue cornflower pattern a few years ago for the 50th anniversary for what ever reason they didn't bring back the percolator. And there are a lot of models of them.



If I ever do pick up one it will not go off grid though. On grid when the occasion presents itself my favorite solution:



Hard to beat a percolator for coffee though IMO.

 

Ignoring the internet experts, what what were they bad at?
Indochina, we lost there too.
WWII, they were overrun by the same army that overran the rest of Western Europe and kicked the British off of the continent. And even after the government capitulated the citizens continued to fight. Thus saving hundred of airmen and preparing for D-Day. The US was late to the party
WWI, they fought the enemy to a stand still with the British. The US came along very late in that one.

I could go on and even mention a short fellow that racked up some pretty impressive victories.

Point is the French have and have had a very good military.

Oh and by the way, they helped out quite a bit in the 1770’s during our own little dust up.

 

All valid points, but as a patriotic ‘Merican I’m required to insult the French military capabilities once per year. Ideally while pressing a pot of coffee.

But taking off my American flag tank top for a moment, yes we were quite lucky to have the help we did against the Brits, and you’re right that there was a certain short French fellow who did quite well for himself, for a time.

Some years back, I had an account in St Vincent, Grenadines and travelled there frequently to provide additional training and support for our software. Most evenings, I ate at a small grill near the hotel and was often joined by one or more of the staff. One night, a tourist at a nearby table picked up that I was an American and proceeded to loudly expound on his negative views of US world politics. Things were about to get interesting when a constable came in and asked the waitress if there was a problem. She replied "Nothing I can't handle. The mouthy guy here is French and they haven't started anything they could fininsh in over two hundred years." Most everyone in the bar got a good chuckle.

Agree with the JEEPNIK'S old sarge comment but 24 was ancient to some of us back in the day. I was drafted in early 69 and wearing three stripes before turning 21 in mid 70. Good advice from his dad as well.

No Charbux here, Lavazza and Gevalia darks. They have some nice fine grinds. Haven't upped my game yet to grinding right before. I need a coffee before I do that much work in the morning.
