So this past weekend while on a really simple trail, I had a wheel come off of my 2005 Tacoma OR. The wheels had been mounted for a little over a month, and torqued to specs. Long story short, I reached out to SpiderTrax, and they mentioned their spacers are for OEM wheels, and since I'm running aftermarket wheels they don't recommend them for my setup due to fitment. I bought the truck used with the current wheels, and it looks like they had been on the truck for awhile. It had 3 ECCPP (and a no name) spacers prior, but I wanted a recommended brand and SpiderTrax was near the top. So all that said, what recommendations are there specifically for aftermarket wheels. I'm tracking Bora and Synergy. But don't want to run into a similar issue. Also note this is not a negative on SpiderTrax, they just didn't work for my setup I guess.

An alloy wheel wobbling around will do that.

What did you torque the lug nuts too and what type did you use?

Are the nylon centering rings missing from the wheels?

The spidertrax spacers don't require a specific wheel. They're designed to perfectly match the dimensions of the oem hub face

Personally I wouldn't trust any wheel where the center bore doesn't fit snug around the lip on the hub.

Some of this Some of that
These McGard lugs have a washer part that rotates as the lug is tightened. A little better quality than the eBay ones

These are all four wheels currently. 3 still on SpiderTrax one on the old ECCPP. They look snug.

Looks like your original wheels are NOT supposed to have acorn shaped lugs. Make sure you have the right type.

Looks like the wheels were loose and egged out the rims.

looks to me like you are using a cone type lug nut on wheels designed for a flat shoulder nut. The stock wheels use a flat shoulder nut as well. If that is the case, no wonder they came off. A cone type nut has to fit into a cone shaped seat in the wheel

Not sure to understand how a wheel can come off if you still have 5 stud on the spacer

The photo of the wheels is after the damage had been done, so the holes look different. But the other 4 are still good, and I'll try to take a photo when there is more light. But the seat for these wheels isn't flat.

I put in an order for Bora spacers today, hopefully they won't take too long to get in.

As a previous poster questioned.. please take a picture of one of your lug nuts removed from the wheel. There are (at least) 2 different types used on Tacomas. My steel wheels use "acorn" lug nuts and my alloys use "mag" lug nuts.

It's easy to picture acorn style lugs digging out the holes on an alloy wheel that needs mag lug nuts.

I personally like H&R spacers, ran them on a few vehicles (4x4 and car related) without issue.

But yes, check that all you nuts/bolts are the proper seat type as others have mentioned.

Like the others have said, take a few photos of the wheel. Especially in the cavity for the lugnuts. I dont know if the photos will explain anything because if it is as you claim, all 4 wheels should have worn down identically if you were using 24x wrong lugnuts.

You claim your wheels do not have a flat surface for the lugnuts, but the photos show otherwise.

    Screenshot_20211028-095002_Chrome.jpg

I'm with the others in the belief that wrong lugnuts were used on these wheels. I think lugnuts with the 60deg taper end were used (ebay link above) on wheels that needed a flat non-tapered end.

Imagine having to run a marathon on your tiptoes while carrying another person on your shoulders. You'll snap your toes eventually.....and thus, why a wheel stud sheared off.

And like the others have stated, if your wheel isn't hub centric, then it better as hell be lug centric. And if it isnt centered properly, your mounting hole will get all augered out-of-round like that from the imbalance.

I agree... And I would add that those wheels are likely trash now due to the wrong lug nuts.

I agree. But luckily, the OP looks like he's using a different set of wheels now.
