Any woodworkers?

Sorry to hear about the mess you had to deal with in the basement. Looks like you did a good job cleaning everything up. I need to clean the surface of my Grizzly tablesaw too. It got drenched in the storm a month ago. I’ll eventually get to it.

 

That had such subtle dad joke qualities to it I didn't know if you were in pain or relieved ha! Incredibly sh*tty situation but good to see for the most part it's worked out.

I’ve been sick for a week, and now the kids are home sick, so not much progress, but I got a few more planks on, and got one end shaped. I think I considered 8 different types of saws to cut that curve, put them all down and ended up tracing my curve out and doing it freehand with a real sharp blade. Turned out pretty good, and the leading edge gets hidden by the gunwales anyways.

 

I should say, the curve I’m referring too is the lower curve that runs along the side of the boat. The front leading edge will get cut with a coping saw and sanded even with the inner stem before the outer stem is attached.

 

@CXYyuppie so sorry to hear about your flooded basement. That happened to me as well, I had just gone through a divorce and had finally gotten everything moved into my new house. All my tools and entire shop was in boxes on the basement floor. We had a freak storm and every house in the city had water in the basement. I realized I was getting water in and I put rubber boots on and stuffed rags in the drain and stood on it for an hour until the water started going down. I lost some stuff but not a lot. Some of my close neighbors had 15" in their basements. Since then I have installed a one way check valve in the floor drain so this won't happen again, I also have a plug I can put in if I thi k it's necessary during a heavy storm.

We do not have basements in south Louisiana or it would be an indoor swimming pool, lol.
We had that nice little storm called Hurricane Ida with 150mph winds. Every home around here has damage. I was lucky and probably had the least amount in my neighborhood. I screwed up and moved my saw to a different placement in my shop to make room for storing other items. My overhang gutter leaked when the wind was kicking. I think only the cast top got wet on my saw. I still haven’t had time to pull it out of the shop. I’m still working on repairs outside of the house. At least it’s not raining inside.

I thought basements had a sump pump just in case it got water in it?

 

Newer houses with basements have sump pumps. My house was built in the 50's and they just had floor drains back then. I had a house with a sump pump in the basement, I had more floods from the pump going out than I have had in this house without a pump. Grading all around the house to get the water to flow away from the house was a big help.

 

I’ve almost got one side of the bottom closed in, and realized I’m about 4 pieces short. Once I get half of it enclosed, I need to mark and cut my centerline, then fit the opposite side in to match. I’ve set aside and numbered the other side to book end match what I’ve done. Going to spend the evening scouring lumber yards for 10’ pieces of cedar with enough usable knot free sections.

So far I’m not regretting using flat planks without cove and bead, there’s two sections on each side I’m going to end up doubling up my planks, due to having to bend them in 3 directions at once, I don’t have enough edge to edge contact for my liking. In hindsight I should have beveled those boards to fit better, but hey, at least the next boat will be easier?

It’s getting cold quickly here, so it’s looking like a garage heater is in my future. If anyone has recommendations, I’m all ears!

I started a little project today, it's not fine wood working but it is wood, lol. It's going to be a cat shelter for some outdoor feral cats that I feed.
I started with a free wooden shipping crate on a pallet.

The outside of the crate is getting wrapped in some 5/8" exterior grade plywood. I just screwed it on with some deck screws.

Some of the screws poked through to the inside so a 4" grinder with a flap disc took care of that.

Next I cut a pice to cover the floor and notched the corners to clear the inside corner post of the crate.

I layed it in the bottom and screwed it down.

Next I dimensioned some rough sawn poplar I've had for years, I figured this would be a good use for it

I dimensioned it to 2x3 boards, I'll probably need to make more for the roof rafters.

That's as far as I got today. This shelter will get some kind of foam board insulation and it'll have a hinged top so I can clean it out as needed and add fresh straw bedding from time to time.
I'll post more as I make progress. So far I have zero cost in this project as I usually do things, lol.

 

I’ve got a centerline to work towards, and a day off work today. Once the little monsters are off to school, I’m sharpening my chisels and hopefully fitting in the rest of these!

 

Doing some cabinet work in my daughters new townhouse. She said she likes sanding! It therapeutic. Her and her husband closed on the place Friday.

 

Success, I’ve got the hull closed in. Raced the cold weather but got the last plank in tonight. I have a couple spots to double up the planks, about 1200 staples to pull, cut both of the stems in, spend a solid week planing and sanding, learn how to fiberglass things, build gunwales, seats, and trim, but I built a boat!
