Rear diff fluid change

Had the day off and was bored. Main reason for changing it at 17k is that I went through water that was deeper than expected, and it was bothering me knowing that water may have gotten into the rear diff. So for about 50 bucks of oil, it was worth it for peace of mind.

Drain plug appeared to be nearly maxed out with metal.

Fluid appeared to be dark in this cup, but coming out, it didn’t appear so bad. I am aware color doesn’t indicate the life/protection of the oil.


Overall, it believe it was well worth the peace of mind. If it wasn’t for the concern of water, I would have waited until 30k.

 

Did you relocate the Breather to behind the tail light or someplace higher?

 

not yet. I don’t plan on doing anything water related for a while but it is on my to do list.

 

Worth it and its quick, easy, and cheap!

Just a reminder: always remove the fill plug BEFORE you remove the drain plug (just to make sure you can).

 

I just changed mine, at 70k, for the first time. The fluid came our surprisingly clear. It did have a little metallic river look, but that could be an additive. There was surprisingly little metal on the magnet. I filled it back up with the same fluid as OP, and even torqued the plugs to 36 ft/lb. Guessing that will be the last time it is ever changed lol.
