Anything in particular you did or watched/read to prepare your dog for hunting?

Well, I guess that depends on how trained you want your dog to be. Best to start with a dog who is well bred from hunting stock. Not a guarantee that your dog will be a good hunting dog but good breeding helps. Lexi’s parents are hunting dogs and compete in dog trials. I bought her from a trainer at 1 year old at what is called the “started level”, which basically means she can heal, return on call, fetch a bird or bumper, follow basic commands. From there I train her every single day, rain or shine. When training with live birds I visit a local trainer who has birds and property. It is a lot of work.

Yeah in hindsight if I was dead set on a hunting pup and was big into bird hunting, I would have followed that path but I have a feeling in the long run it will be my bird skill limiting her and not the other way around. We train almost every day for basic obedience and I’ve watched/read a bunch on gun training. When we get to the bird stage, I think I’ll try to find a local professional as well.

On this week's installment of Adventures with Roy, we headed off to Los Padres National Forest to one of my secret spots. Gotta be given the combo to the gate locks from the ranger to get here. Such a hidden gem.

I adopted my previous dog, Scooter, through a Collie Rescue organization. Every year they publish a calendar of their adoptee dogs as a fund-raiser. Scooter was Mr. November for 2014. R.I.P. Scooter.

 

My condolences on your loss of such a fine dog.

Thank you. He was suffering from pancreatitis and his joints had given out to the point that he could no longer walk. So we had to give him the shot.

He was a certified Therapy Dog and that vest was his veteran's tribute vest. I guess that's why the put him for November (Veteran's Day).

But now I have Sebastian. He'll never replace Scooter but he is an awesome successor.

 

It's funny how we choose a breed and stick with it even if they have breed specific health issues. We are on out 5th Rotti and have lost 2 to cancer.

 

Couldn't agree more. We stick with Beagles because of their temperament, but they have spine issues, and that reverse snorting/sneeze they can develop.

 

yep...lost our 3rd GSD 2 years ago to cancer...all 3 were stomach cancer

have had 5 Huskies, and 3 of the 5 died of heart attacks; the other 2 were cancer

can't wait to get the next ones!!
