Yeah, ford thought they could muscle the ranger market into the F150, sell them a more expensive truck and cut production cost.

What they did instead is push the ranger market (myself included) into japanese midsize trucks, and I am not sure how many are coming back.

This maverick seems to just be a ford escape with a bed, not really a true truck

When I was truck shopping I had never thought about the ridgeline, until one of my buddies got one and was able to haul motorcycles with it. I briefly considered it until I realized it was basically the same cost as the taco

I do like the shift, the American truck market has kind of turned into a dick measuring contest of who can have the biggest truck with the most aggressive grill.

That being said the Santa Cruz was disappointing to me. In the add they have it carrying bike on a hitch carrier rather than a bed. If a bed cant carry a bicycle I would rather have an SUV with a weathertech mat

Hit the nail on the hit with the dick measuring. US market has been stale and going away from what’s useful against who has the biggest/fastest truck. I want to see some normal everyday people options….

A big issue is that it is rare that folks buy trucks any more, they finance.
When people are shopping based on monthly payment instead of cost out the door it is easier to upsell them into a truck they dont need

I dont know, the US market seems to have tons of truck options to fit what people are looking for, probably why they outsell cars now.

Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but it’s the same B.S. with motorcycles. I’ve ridden motorcycles for 50 years and now we’re told (in the USA) we need at least 1800ccs. I’ve had bigger in the past, but my two 900cc bikes and even my 500 can accelerate as fast as I need to, and can do 25 over the highway speed limit while throwing a lot less heat on my legs and crotch.

As I understood it, Ford had used Toyota-designs prior (in the Fusion/MKZ Hybrid) and then basically made their own.

Not sure what your press release stated, but it could just be marketing of them trying to toot their own horn. I believe it's a "clean sheet" Ford design, but they were basically re-engineering the Toyota unit to their needs/specs.

Regardless, it's similar enough that it should be just as reliable as the Toyota CVT, because it's just a generally reliable way to build a transmission.

The fastest truck that you can't buy is the F150 3.5 ecoboost SSV Police Responder. Ford reports the top speed at 120mph. The RAM TRX is rated at 118mph, it's only a 2mph difference but I think the TRX is heavier than the F150.

Tuning the TRX would probably make it the faster truck.

Toyota and Ford actually partnered together a few years back to design hybrid trucks so it makes total sense to end up with similar designs.

Like a few of the other posters here, I just ordered one -- a XLT hybrid. More then 2x the fuel economy of my Tacoma and it's perfect for all the local running around as well as road trips pulling our 500lb teardrop. I love my Taco but my wife can't drive it (stick and she's not comfortable with its size) so the Maverick makes sense for us. The one thing I hate, though, is that I know I'm selling a taco that has crazy good resale for a Ford that probably won't hold value even half as well.

I considered buying one, for a split second. Then I bought a 2022 Civic instead. Resale will be much better on the Civic. Get to keep my 4x4 rig and have a commuter car to save gas. It's just too small to fill the truck category. It tips it's toes in several categories and I think having 2 different vehicles is the better option. Cool truck though, I wouldn't bash anyone getting one. Curious to see how small it is in person.

No guarantee on resale price. But you do you.

Nah, in 2 years you will be able to snatch up a used Maverick for $10-$15k. Civic will still be worth $18-$20k. I guarantee it.

It'll really depend. There's not been anything like it to hit the used market to compare it to, at least not the Hybrid.

Trucks have usefulness as work vehicles, and an uber efficient compact truck might be attractive to enough people to keep the value up among those that don't need to tow the earth.

The Civic is a good name but it's in a crowded segment.

Agree there hasn't been anything like the Maverick. It might be a mega hit. The civic is just more certain. Historically it's a solid car for resale, especially right now and for the next 2 years.

    Ridgeline?

I'd like to have a compact truck, but I still want it to be a truck. The Maverick isn't exactly what I'd want for a compact truck. I'd rather have a 2dr body on frame Rwd with a part time 4x4 transfer case.

I think I'd rather drive a F150 over the new Maverick, but the Maverick is probably good for running around in while providing some utility.

Honda obviously builds great vehicles, but I don't really care about resale value that much, it is a good thing to take into consideration.

10 years ago who would of thought that the resale value of a 1991 Mustang GT would have increased?

Them fox body mustangs are sweet.

1/2 the reason I bought a Tacoma was for resale. It's an important aspect for me. I sold my Taco for more than I paid for it new. Bought my LX470 2 years ago. It's almost doubled in value since.

Some folks truly don't care about resale though, like ppl that buy new BMWs.
