I currently have 255/85/16's cooper st maxx and they are going to need to be replaced soon. I dont want to run the st maxx again and i dont really want to go to a mud terrain. So that leaves two options go back down to a 265/75/16 or up to a 285/75/16. Who here is running 285's how bad is the rub? Most specifically is anyone running them with a wheel with more than 4.5 backspacing or positive offset with out spacers? I currently have 16x8 wheels +10 i was hoping to be able to clear the factory uca's. I know there will be some rubbing on plastics and possibly cab mount just looking for peoples experience with similar wheels. Thanks IMG_5045.jpg

I been trying to research tires since I just got my truck what is making you decide to not get the MTs again? I have been leaning 265/75/16 myself as I like all terrain tires or maybe 235/85/16 still trying to figure it out. My biggest concern with MT is the tire noise and maybe wet traction being sub par. I am on the roads more than dirt by far and the look of the tire is less important to me than the function.

curious why you don't want the ST Maxx again. just making a change, or something you didn't like about them? i liked them a lot but wet tarmac traction was a problem so i run AT3 LT E's. kinda miss the Maxx's. and kinda don't.

I love the tire its more aggressive than an A/T but not as aggressive as an M/T. Great in all conditions but my first set wore funny basically feathering i played it off as i broke a spring and that caused it but it was all 4 tires not one. Second set was on a different truck all new suspension and they wore the same way. I typically rotate every 3-5k i do a decent amount of road driving but i do spend a good bit of time offroad for work so the more aggressive tire was great. My boss had a set and they wore the same way so i'm not sure if this is a issue with this tire or not. I have read of others having this problem as well. if it wasnt for the wearing funny causing the tires to be extremely loud and cause steering wheel shake then i would buy them again. With that said my current tires have 25k on them ive had the truck put in alignment twice and the tires balanced multiple times and still have this issue.

I use my truck for work so i do spend a decent amount of time both on and off road with my job. I'm swaying away from an M/T due to tread life, noise and traction on ice and wet roads.

thanks for the solid answer. i can't say if it was the same as your experience, but i also rotated every ~5k, went through two sets of ST Maxx, and they lasted under 25k each set. after rotating them the first time they would never normalize again after rescrubbing post-rotation. i had questions about their life & wear, but the catalyst for changing to a different tire was simply the wet tarmac traction deficiency. i've been quite happy with the AT3 LT's, the Coopers. i think i'm on my 3rd set of them.

I'm fairly sure that you won't rub anywhere but the upper control arm with that offset and 285 width. With more offset you will clear the uca but rub the cab mount

I plan to get 17” wheels next time around and run 255/80R17 Wildpeaks or Toyo AT3s.

not enough mud to assess them. plenty of snow and ice and that was pretty good.

I'm currently looking for a set of sport wheels to maybe do the same.
