    Thanks, that's very interesting.
I'm just coming at it from the economic angle.

The point I was making is that NG has many other uses apart from conversion into "gasoline".
Why pour billions into a plant to do that?
I don't for one moment buy the environmental impact claims.
And I don't believe it can make economic sense without subsidies of some kind.

There is untapped NG supply, yes, but the same applies to fracked oil in the Permian Basin.
With oil refining, you're gonna get gasoline as one of the outputs, no choice involved there.
And you don't need specialized plant to do it.

There's a reason why NG prices are sometimes expressed in BOE (Barrels of Oil Equivalent).
The price of one affects the other.
With NG prices spiking in Europe, demand for alternatives goes up.
Right now even coal is in higher demand, with production being the highest worldwide in ten years.

For the last several years, the small independent frackers have been victims of their own success.
The Saudis tried (and failed) to drive them out of business in 2014-5.
It turned out the Saudis didn't have enough spare capacity to drive down prices at that time without the cooperation of the rest of OPEC.
It was the boom in production here in the US that did it.
Oversupply led to prices crashing, and the surviving independents cut back on exploration, drilling and capital investment.
I don't expect them to be in a hurry to drill more...they've learned their lesson and want to take advantage of current higher prices.
They are bringing on new production though, cautiously.

Energy prices are extremely sensitive to supply/demand imbalances.
Inventory (storage capacity) is necessarily limited and demand is inelastic in the short term.
Last I checked, inventory is historically low at the Cushing, OK storage and trans-shipment node.
This is the major US pipeline hub for WTI (West Texas Intermediate).
People need to heat their homes, they need to drive their cars. They can cut back on those things only so far.
To a point, they have little choice but to pay the going price.
That is the very definition of inelastic demand.

    But to the main point:
Sure, you can make "gasoline" from NG.
Not technically the same chemically, but usable in gasoline engines.
It's gonna be more expensive to make.
    Why bother?

    Me too :fistbump:

I didn't do it deliberately, but hey, six months go by fast when you're having fun retired.
I'm getting so lazy and shaving is such a bother.

I don't think Mrs Gritto likes it, but she refuses to comment (she knows me too well).
It might be as long as @TacomaDave 's beard before she finally says anything. :notsure:

Damn, you think like an old guy. Now I don’t mean that in a bad way, so don’t take it that way. I know you remember when it was a big deal to be a millionaire but now you have people worth hundreds of billions of dollars so 6 billion is a drop in the bucket nowadays. These people are thinking far ahead of everyone else. Inflation is going to bring up the price of everything and they will tell you that’s not the reason. It all starts with a “shortage” and the price goes up and never comes down. You’re seeing it right now. Unless you have enough trees to chop down or have mineral rights to coal on your property, you will shut up and pay the bill each month to stay warm.

    True, true.

But I know one thing for sure:
It's not the money that counts for people like that...it's hard assets.

And it takes money to buy hard assets.

ps. One thing that I have witnessed in my life is that you don’t get rich being nice so there is still hope for me. :D
