garage flooring

when i moved into my house i did the epoxy garage coating crap you can get a lowes, prepped the concrete, etc etc...anyway its pealing up and looks like crap. Dont really wanna strip all of it down and get a better epoxy, I want to get like some rubber/vinyl coin mat to lay down in the garage. Anyone know where i can get a deal on the mat. It seems to be quite expensive. I'd like to purchase local, but I guess im open to ordering online...but being around 250lbs of vinyl mat to fill the garage, im sure shipping isnt cheap.

 

No warranty on the epoxy? That's really unusual that it'd be peeling up if it was installed correctly. Epoxy flooring is one of the most durable flooring solutions you can get for a garage. Chipping it up and redoing it correctly would be your best, longest lasting option by far.

If your sold on the rubber mat idea, try your local commercial flooring distributer. Big box stores will be very expensive.

 

the epoxy stuff you get at your local hardware store is junk man, i know at least 5 people that have used it, and all of there's have peeled up as well on bare concrete, so i dont want to use it again. Now I have seen a professional epoxy floor done at another guys house, took 2days too do, but my god does it look sexy....its night and day difference, and so is the price! I think he said it was a couple grand, but i guess you get what you pay for.

 

Very true, that's what I was referring to, the commercial grade epoxy. It's indestructible! Good luck to you, if you have a friend in commercial contracting, they should be able to recommend a flooring distributer to find rubber rolled flooring.

 

I'm not sure what rubber flooring costs, but I put Amstrong VCT down in my garage and I love it. 400 sq. ft. garage and the total cost was just over $300 for everything. I put it all down in 2 days. I've had it for about 2 years now with no complaints other than that it is a little slippery when wet.

You are right about the hardware store epoxy. I don't know anyone who doesn't have peeling problems with it.

I would chip up the loose stuff, re-prep, re-prep again, then re-prep it again. You will need to use a pressure washer. Then re-apply the epoxy again, following the directions to the T. Plus wait at least a week before you park on the floor again.

As with any paint job. It's 95% prep.

With the rubber mat, your garage will forever smell like rubber. Plus if water seeps into the seams and gets underneath it's going to mildew and smell worse than the rubber itself.

 

I heard the VCT tiles cant withstand cold climates and should only be used in temp controlled areas.

 

What you're looking at is called VCT (as stated above) Vinyl Compound Tile. I put in floors for a living. VCT is extremely tough if installed properly, i've personally never seen any temp problems with it. Make sure it's installed properly and you shouldn't have any problems, i've put it in many garages, myself.

Another option if you want something a bit cheaper, they make a commercial gluedown carpet that is pretty tough. Used mainly in high traffic businesses.

Many brands of indoor/outdoor carpets are also available that could easily handle such an application as yours.

Personally i wouldn't recommend a rubber matting, they tend to break loose of the glue and slide. And that's a bad idea when you're trying to stop your vehicle on them.
