Please help anyone!

To start I have a 2005 Tacoma prerunner dc with 149000 In the past month I've noticed a weird click/tick noise in the front end. It starts at around 10mph and dissipates around 30, can't hear it after due to engine and going faster. It only seams to happen when I'm cruising not pressing or letting up on gas pedal. And dosent have much of a pattern, example( tick tick.....tick......tick tick tick) something like that. Dosent seam to get worse with turning but it will sometimes happen when I hit a bump. I've taken to tires plus to have them diagnose problem and asshole said he can't replicate noise but he herd a growl in the front left bearing witch he thinks could be bad. So I called Toyota and they quoted 600.09$ for parts and labor to replace bearing. But I'm not sure that the bearing is making noise I'm hearing because every other topic on here concerning front bearing describes a growl like asshole tire plus guy claimed. I'm really lost TW and don't know what to do. I don't want to pay Toyota 600$ to still have tick in the end.I took it to toyota today to have them look but vehical isn't under warranty anymore so it's gunna cost 65$ to look and they didn't have time to do it today so I have to try tomorrow. Anyone experience a tick up front and fix it? Or anyone have a suggestion on what it might be. If more information is needed ill gladly give it just tell me what you need to know. Please anyone chime in on this. I'm about to pull my hair out of my head.

 

Sounds like maybe something is catching on / around the wheel area? I once had the metal guard that sits at the rear of the rota start to catch on the rota itself. Maybe something had been thrown up of the road and had pushed it onto the rota. I just bent it back and everything was good. I would start with the simple, easy to get to bits and have a good look and feel around before taking your Tac to the stealership or some rip off twat at your local garage, unless you can trust them to be honest with you. Get some of your mates to have a look too, you never know and could save you shit loads of money. Good luck

 

so turning doesnt cause it... but throttle control does?

Turning dosent make it better or worse. Still just ticks like going strait no more or less. And throttle is only thing I've noticed that controls it. It dosent do it when idling.

 

Have you tried throttling while in neutral w/ e-brake on? Have someone press the gas and get under that thing!

 

Yea nothing. It's only when it moves. I'm starting to think it may not be in front. I just tried pulling rotor gaurd off break a little and after driving to see if it wad gone it was still there. So I got out and started pushing truck back and forward while parked and engine off and it made same tick noise but it was toward rear and not front? This isn't making any sense now

 

Anyone know any honest mechanics on spacecoast part of Florida or Orlando or anywhere who can loom at this shit. Because I'm lost now

 

Could be a u-joint going bad.

 

I replaced them at 100,000. Not that it can't be the problem. Last time though I had a weird squeak with those. Is it put car in neutral and get under it and try turning drive shaft. If it has play it's bad, or park you put truck in then turn drive shaft?

FWIW ... I had a 2007 Tundra that was making a noise like that.

It was a loose/bent heat shield near the front - that was "resonating & vibrating" with higher RPMs.

How did you discover it? Was it a metal on metal tick? This seams like it could be anything. Some other site a guy was saying his did this and he went to Toyota and there's a TSB for longer front bumper mounts and it stopped his? WTF

 

if ur driving and u hear it, try puttin it in nuetral. that isolates the ngine from drivetrain. this is where's id start.

 

I just really want to find/solve this issue. I've been obsessing the past week over it. Afraid it's gunna get to a point where something breaks and I'm fucked.

Ok I drove around block and got up to about 5mp and started to hear so I kept going to 10mph to get some rolling speed and threw it in neutral and it's still doing it? And after rolling window down and literally hanging more than half way out I'm convinced I was wrong and it's not in front but closer to rear tires.

 

ok so thats def drive train related. it'd inspect everything from the back of the trany to the tires... including u joints, brakes etc... if i were workin on ur truck, itd throw it on the lift and run it and lift it so i could hear it while its turning the tires. if ur that dedicated ha u could jack up ur rear and throw it in drive or like 2nd or 3rd for mt. listen and look for abnormalities... but honestly a good tech should be able to narrow it down within an hour of work. from a tech's perspective it helps alot to know exactly what noise im listening for. if u bring it in to the dealership, ask to drive with the service manager or even the tech help him out in hearing it. then it can be narrowed down quickly with little diag as possible
