OK I know there's a whole thread about scooped hood trading, but since I'm new to forum I can't post reply/question there till I have 50 posts. Fair enough.

Anyway I have question about selling your non scooped hood. Where are you guys unloading your non scooped hoods? Do they even sell? I'm thinking of just buying a new scooped hood but I don't have a giant home to store my old hood so I curious how long it took for people to unload their old hoods?

I bought a scooped hood last week. When it gets here I'll put my non-scooped hood up on these forums, craigslist and facebook market place for like $300 or something. I have no idea if that pricing is high or low, but I figure I'll start there and adjust if needed.

Remember too, that every part is stamped or marked with OEM vin#, so changing the hood would be noticed in some states by DMV, when that sort of thing is checked by them. It could then result in your having your vehicle designated as a salvage vehicle because of this mismatching vin#s. I don't know what parts trigger this change, but it is noteworthy.

This happened on my wife's RAV4. She had someone hit her in the front, resulting in our having to have the front replaced. The car was not hurt, mechanically, and was actually driveable to get the vehicle home and to the mechanic. But because the hood was replaced and had different vin#s on it, the DMV issued a salvage title, which pretty much pissed us off, as that in and of itself, decreased the resale value of the car. I can tell people WHY it has a salvage title, but I can understand it if they didn't believe me and shied away from a salvage title. Luckily, the wife loves her 1996 RAV4, which has over 241,000 miles on it and still runs well as it has been meticulously maintained, so we don't plan on selling it at all. Still though, every year when we renew the license plate, the renewal comes with "salvage vehicle" stamped on it, and it just disgusts me!

Dang! That's really not worth it for a cosmetic upgrade on my end. I plan on reselling this sucker when new 4Runner or Taco 4th gen comes around so last thing I need is a possible "Salvage" stamp on the rig. Thanks for heads up!

Really? Every vehicle that requires a hood replacement will get a salvage title? I find that hard to believe, but if true, is yet another fine example of the government f-ing all of us- again.

I don’t think it was because the hood was replaced. Was an insurance company involved or an estimate done showing a cost of repairs? That is what made it salvage.

Replacing a hood would not make it salvage otherwise millions of cars would be salvaged that should not be. Cars that put on aftermarket hoods, high end cars that have a tree fall on the hood only, etc. You imagine a new 911 Porsche that needed 1 new part that was damaged from a tree or something and now it did not have a vin and it was salvage. :angrygirl:

Each state has their own laws for DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles).

I registered a vehicle in FL and then back to DE and the inspection requirements were very different.

It's best to goto local DMV and ask what the requirements are for making a change to a truck's hood. Follow their requirements and hopefully it's a smooth process.

NO, sort of. Only if there is some instance where DMV will have to check your vehicle. If you have an accident [and this is in CA] and the damage exceeds $1000, I think at least that is the amount, then one is actually required to report the accident to DMV even if you settle it between yourself and the other party involved. Of course, if you are quick and get off the highway before any cops show up, then there is no way they will find out, UNLESS either or both parties report the accident to their insurance companies. THAT is when DMV usually gets notified, because of this law about the $1000 accident amount. Once the insurance company reports it, that is when the hassle with DMV begins, when they send you a letter saying they will change the designation of your vehicle to one with a salvage title. You cannot even renew your license plate until this gets cleared up. And get this, they even make you get a new plate!

I don't think there is an actual "rule" that says if the hood is replaced, that one automatically gets a salvage title. I think it has to do more with the value of the damage. In the case of my wife's RAV4, because it was so old, they considered replacing the hood to "total" the car, which is how I define obscenity! And yes, they wouldn't have known anything unless the other person who hit my wife's car, their insurance company, reported it to DMV because the cost to replace it was over $1000, and in CA, accidents where the damage is over $1000, must be reported to DMV.

I don't think so. Otherwise, every time someone had a fender bender their vehicle would be totaled! Common sense usually prevails.

What the heck is an "original equipment manufacturer vehicle identification number number"? A part number and a VIN are two different things.

obviously. But manufacturers stamp the VIN# on various parts of the vehicle so that owners or potential buyers will know if a part has been swapped out or not. I don't know how long this has been going on, but in a way, I can see why it is done. I mean, imagine you pull into DMV with an old Volkswagen Beetle, say a 1967, and you tell them you want to get a plate for it. Because it had never been registered in CA at least, they will make you do certain things such as get a brake and light check, and certifications of both, before they will let you title it in CA and subsequently, get a plate. The last thing they do, is they come out and look under the hood and note engine VIN# among other parts. So if you put, let's say, an engine in there from a much later year, that required smogging for that year, then they may or may not make you then smog this 1967 VW, even though under normal circumstances, it would be exempt.

I bought a scooped hood from Toyota and have the original hood in the box the new one came in. (In storage).

The part number on your hood is the same part number that's on my hood, no relationship to our vehicle's unique VIN's. You won't be issued a salvage title if you install a scooped hood.
