Just got an 07 4cyl 5 speed. About 220k miles on it. Love it but has a whine type sound, most noticeably in 5th gear at around 60mph. Only when pressure is on gas…if you let off gas goes away. If you shift to fourth it goes away. Can also hear a little in 1st through 3rd.
    Any ideas?

    Syncro most likely.

Any history related to service / fluid changes?

I don’t have any. Is there anything that can be done without major tear down? Any type of flushing or different type of fluid that may help?

Reverse on my 5 speed has deep sounding whine/groan since I bought it 15k miles ago. Goes into gear fine and all. Fluid change to redline didn’t change anything. Not sure if it’s the same sound you’re experiencing but I’m just rolling with it

Also have a pretty bad “bucking” when I let out the clutch going into second gear, but only uphill or if I clutch out too fast. But that’s unrelated here lol

I would change the fluid and use the GL4 weight that it calls for in a bargain priced dino. Run a 1000 miles or so like that.

If things are a bit better (quieter/smoother) I'd then change to a GL4 synthetic of the right weight and call it a day.

You cant 'repair' worn syncos with fluid. However, you may be able to make things feel and sound a bit better. And stop any excessive wear that may have been occurring if the wrong GL spec had been previously used.

My 6th gear does that. It's been doing that since I bought it 4 years ago with 168k miles on it and it currently has 220k miles. No issues that I'm aware of aside from the annoying whine.

I have the same reverse whine on my '10 with ~167k miles on it.
I put it in the same category as the squeaky clutch pedal...
It's just how the truck is lol :notsure:

OP, the 5th gear whine makes sense because that is where it spends most of its time, and wear. Did you notice this noise during the test drive(s).

If this were mine I would first want to rule out the rear diff as it can mimic that noise and transmit the sound up the frame and drive shaft so that you might swear it is coming from the transmission but it is not.

Had a Subaru once that it too whined like crazy and I was convinced it was a bearing and ended up replacing everything from the diff to wheel bearings to the carrier bearing.

Turns out a piece of gravel got wedged between the subframe and body mount.

Whine in the transmission is often due to worn bearings and/or gears. Those are something that usually require parts replacement. It is often cost prohibitive to have a shop do the work IMHO, and since you do not know the maintenance history, your best bet would probably be to locate a low mileage used transmission and put that in instead.

I have never had much success with various "mechanic in a bottle" type products since they fail to address worn parts. One exception might be the Lubeguard for Gears product. It may quiet things down a little but do not expect anything dramatic.

You sure you are not confusing it with the differential whine?

Was going to suggest ruling out the differential. But @Taco'09 AND @Junkhead both beat me to it.

Sounds a lot like a bad diff.

I’ve chalked it up to just being a quirk. Doesn’t do it every time I’m in reverse anyway

I don’t see how it can be the differential when it only does it in certain gears. 1st and second slightly. Fifth the most. At 60mph it is whining in fifth and I can shift to fourth and it is as quiet as a church mouse?

I have a 2011 5 Speed 2.7 with 245k. And mine does the exact same thing. Whine sound in 5th around 60ish only when foot on gas. Think it’s just a weird quirk.

Getting ready to change transmission fluid. Is there a type or weight that would be better to help with this?

Redline MT90 is highly recommended here. I wanna say it made the shifts smoother but could just be a placebo effects. I have the same configuration truck as you pretty much.

My '07 2.7 4x4 5speed 240K miles has been doing the same for the past 30K miles or so. I changed fluid with no impact. I just leave it in 4th till I'm over 70mph. no more whine...
