Haven't been on in a long time, Hope all of y'all are doing well. Question for you fine gents, some jackass cut off one of my catalytic converters last night. I'm thinking about replacing it with just a straight Y pipe. Has anyone done that, and would it still pass emissions?

The real cats are tucked up higher toward the motor. Did they get that or one of the secondary cats/resonators?

I also was thinking about a y pipe also. Havent had any theft issues, but just for performance. I have the same inspection question.

I would only assume that it would pass if the O2s work correctly and not throwing codes for the tester, since not many shops use sniffer.

Like Texoma said, only the first cat is monitored, so removing the second cat should not throw a code. But, keep in mind, if TX changes to a visual or a sniff test on the annual inspection probe, then you could be screwed. Also, the second cat controls some of the sound, you may not like it, but if not you should be able to change mufflers cheaper than cats.

They took one of the secondary's, still have the cats on the manifolds. I'm in Travis county so I figured if anyone does the sniff test it would be them.

No place in TX is doing a sniff/visual that I am aware of. Checking for codes is the extent,,, I think.

Which vehicles are required to have the emissions test?

    • Vehicles registered in designated counties. Designated counties include: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson.
    • Gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection.
    • Vehicles 2 through 24 years old OR upon expiration of the two-year initial inspection sticker.
    https://www.dps.texas.gov/rsd/vi/inspection/inspectioncriteria.aspx

So if you get inspected outside these counties, you're probably good.

Careful though. The "emissions" test referenced is not a sniffer, but rather a check for OBD-II codes.

Update, they took both of the secondary's... Anyone got a line on a Y-pipe that's in stock or used?

I was looking at the Coffee with Cars in Dripping Springs, they just had one this past Sunday and are still active. Also the Lago Vista Farmers market has one monthly. There's also a Pistons in the park coming up as well, I think this coming Sunday.

A little something every chance we get.
This was posted in August on the page, which is a wreck.

Note "although the event won't be taking place over the next few months".....

Wasn't the Dripping Springs event thrown by Hill Country Cruisers?
