Ordered a complete rear end with 36k miles from a 460 and a front clamshell with 9600mi on it also from a 460.

planning on keeping the factory 3.90 gears and adding a rear ARB locker at a minimum. May go ahead and put one in the front too…with 3.90’s and the size tires I’m gonna be running, it will be ever so slightly undergeared…but at 70+ on the highway it’s turning too high rpm from the factory. Really needs a 6th gear.

it’s a beefier rear diff (8.2”) AND best of all, it still lets me retain KDSS.

should have them delivered next week.

So despite all my research I'm still looking for some clarification/help on lifting my new-to-me GX460.

I have a set of brand new 285/70/17 Toyo AT3s that I need to mount on the truck. I want to avoid any kind of body mount modification. What exactly is needed to fit the Toyos without rubbing? My research tells me that even with 2.5-3" of lift, aftermarket UCAs, and 0 offset wheels there's a chance of rubbing on the mount. Can anyone give me a realistic, definitive answer and some direction on what to (if possible) to avoid breaking out the sawzall and welder?

    Thanks guys.

There is always a chance of rubbing, i guess, since all vehicles are slightly different. but with aftermarket UCAs and a proper alignment, you should not rub the body mount with that size. you might have to hammer your pinch weld and maybe trim some plastic, but that should be it. there are a bunch of guys that have run that size without needing to body mount. many do any way to create extra clearance.

if you are really worried about it, get some 255/80r17s. still a 33" and you will definitely not rub.

Already have the 285s and owe Toyo a review of them. Might ping them and see if they'd swap them for another size. They only make the 255s in E which is overkill for my needs, though. They do have 275/65/18s (C) and 255/70/18s (SL)... thoughts?

Also, yes, scooped up a CPO 2018 460 this week.

@Roody congrats on the new 460!

I think you will like the AT3's a lot - they are great. I would personally not build a rig around a set of tires, and instead find something that fits YOUR needs (ie. not wanting to chop stuff) but I definitely see where you are coming from. Maybe they could send you a different size. I do think you will likely be okay with the 285, but if you don't want to risk it...

I had some SL rated duratracs in a 255/75r17 on the GX before these E rated 255/80r17 AT3s and I can honestly say they do not feel different in terms of on-road comfort. The GX is a heavy pig, I honestly feel that the E rated actually supports the vehicle better, especially around corners. You might be able to feel small bumps a little more, but I don't think my butt-meter's sensitive enough to notice. My lift definitely had more impact on the ride stiffness/quality.

The 275s you mentioned in C might be the perfect balance.

This is awesome for comparing different metric sizes in case that helps you in any way.

Definitely going to pursue other tire sizes. If I'm "stuck" with the 285/70/17s... not the end of the world. I'll suck it up and throw a lift on the thing. Lifted GXs look killer.

The goal for this rig is to be able to daily, tow, road trip, and off-road with ease and comfort. I loved all three 4Runners hat I've had and wanted something with more power and some added comfort that I can have confidence in keeping for the "long haul." The GX (especially used, at the price I paid) is unbeatable for that. I know these are capable rigs out of the box so better tires and armor is the place I'll be starting.

That's not bad at all for new diffs. Since they're not installed you should regear and lock those badboys haha

On a side note my 35s show up tomorrow :bananadance:

def planning on a rear ARB locker at a minimum...not sure if I really would ever need a front one or not, but I also already have the ARB compressor and manifold, so...

just not sure if I want that extra expense right now, although it would be easier to do now versus later. I could just take them both up to ECGS and wait for a few hours while they install them.

I originally planned on a front locker and using an 80 series. tRiPlE LoCkEd switch for an OEM look.

there is a spot next to the 2nd start where it would fit.
