Uhaul Trailer Prices Seem High This Year

So last year I rented a 6'x12' Uhaul trailer to make a move from DC to NY for about $125, which seemed reasonable to me. Now I'm making another move from NY to SC and a quote for the same trailer is $788, or about 630% higher than it was 13 months ago.

Anyone know a place I can rent an enclosed trailer for a one-way trip for a better price?

 

Inflation is a bitch. Unfortunately, I am not sure you can buy one cheaper... maybe check Craig's list or offer up and buy one cheaper.

uhaul is still advertising same prices in my area today as they where last year and the year before that

something must not be right with your rental options

 

I am not disagreeing with you.... just stating facts. Inflation isn't just on the average or people wouldn't be paying 50k for a new tacoma.

I think you may be right. I just reversed the search as if I were picking up in SC and dropping off in NY, the rental price for the same trailer is $59, almost $730 cheaper. What the fuck

 

More people are moving out of NY, demand is higher, thus supply is lower, thus cost is higher. + inflation

it has less to do with supply in NY, and inflation

and just more to do with, how will uhaul get the trailer back out of a low traffic area in SC and back into a high traffic area such as NY or DC

its simply a logistics thing for uhaul

has nothing to do with people leaving NY, nor inflation, nor any potential political reasoning...

simply logistics and money for the uhaul company

 

I'm living in the middle of nowhere upstate NY, so my move right now is from small town to small town. Just really weird all around.

 

i dint think it really matters where in NY

NY has like 20 million inhabitants and SC has like 5 million

logistically speaking, NY is much easier for uHaul, no matter where in the state the trailer may be located

uhaul advertises a flat rate, its those far one way rentals into more remote less populated areas that they up charge

 

TRD OR Tacoma MSRP is $34,690. 630% up would be $218,540.

Anything that can be used to ship goods e.g. a shipping contain has spiked in demand.

The cost of shipping a container from China to the US a year ago was about was 1/10 what it is today. It's not inflation, there is just a massive demand for shipping stuff.

Shipping company stocks (like Matson) are jumping. They've never had more business than they have today. Inflation is a definite problem but the cost of shipping isn't a symptom of it.

U-haul rates can vary depending on what city it is rented form, and what city it is going to.
It can even vary based on how many trucks/trailer one location has vs another.

It cost u-haul money to transfer trucks from one location to another.
As in, one location doesn’t have enough trucks, and one has too many.

FWIW, you might want to check rental prices in the next “smallest” town over.
The cost savings could be worth the extra time and mileage.

 

I did exactly that for about 20 minutes looking everywhere from Buffalo to Vermont and they were all basically the same rate. I'm just gonna bite the bullet and get the damn trailer. Good thing I don't need a whole moving truck the small 10' is coming in at 2500. Just outrageous prices.

 

Id bet alot of that is it being one way. I know when I took a 5x9 enclosed 2 hours away I was quoted an extra 30 dollars vs returning it. My most recent trailer rental was exactly as advertised on the website. But I did return it to the same location I picked it up.

 

As noted above the one-way price from SC to NY is $59. It seems like a north-south thing to me.
