Up for interpretation, but I'd say an unsolvable CEL is substantial. Especially since it's an evap leak, gotta save the atmosphere. ;)

PS: OP, have you checked if a rodent ate through the evap lines?

FWIW, here's a few diagrams just to show the layout of the system. Would be worth crawling underneath and looking at wiring, hoses, etc. The ECU definitely doesn't like what it's seeing from the pump module.

Pure gold thanks, I'm guessing the lazy tech didnt bother with actually checking anything. Just ran codes with the computer and said there is nothing.

I actually check a few days ago and it was fine, plus would all those codes be from low oil or something to do with the evap system?

Yeah I was just throwing the oil thing as an easy one to eliminate. The evap system seems to be where your focus should be.

I would test it and likely call a canister.

Some shops are under scrutiny and can't call it unless it fails.

Canisters are tough to fail in shop, they either fail instantly or never fail.

Once the code comes back refuse to do anything until they make a valid repair.

This will be my next route, after I crawl under there myself and check things out. From what I've been going through it will be back.

I have had these codes pop up from time to time. About 4 or 5 times since new with my Tacoma. With my previous 2005 Corolla XRS, I had the codes every couple of years, sometimes several times in a year. Every time I would check into them and find nothing wrong. It just seems to be a perfect condition and the code sets sort of thing. I just clear them and go along my merry way. You will find that it may be 2 weeks or 2 years between the right conditions to set the codes. I wouldn't worry about them unless they come back immediately.

if that wouldn't do it then why did they ask?
i was told my my salesman never to top it off because it will cause gas to get in the canister and may result in it not starting.

I have had 2 Toyota lemons here in california. 30 days in the shop doesn’t have to be consecutive. Get your paperwork! Keep taking it back be patient…. Tell them your in no rush. I have many cars so it’s no big deal for me I’m the last guy you want to sell a lemon too. I also had 2 fords and one ZR2 duramax go to buy back status. I found the best way to win under lemon law is the 30 days of service in the first 36,000. Sounds like you have a couple of weeks already..but you have to have your poop in a group with documentation..Ford has the own arbitration and Chevrolet and a lot of the others use the Better Business Bureau you do not need to hire a lawyer. So count them out 5 lemon law buy backs and never hired an attorney….

So yeah. To the OP: stop topping off the tank. Seriously. When these more environment-friendly pumps were being rolled out in the 90s I worked at a service station. One day, while talking to the owner he was commenting about the overages he'd been seeing since the new pumps were installed. Turns out it was from people topping off their tanks. The fuel was not going into their tanks, but going back to the station's tanks. Supposedly, the new hoses on the pumps were two-layered with the middle-layer as sort of a return for fumes, etc. People were topping off and the extra gas was just going back through that middle layer and into the tanks.

This is all anecdotal so take it with a grain. The owner did own three or four stations and so did his two daughters. So I don't know. The overages were happening because the tank levels were measure daily. Whether this was actually the cause, it's hard to say. Maybe some Google-fu will help.

While I could settle with that on my 1998 ranger I cant accept that on a brand new truck, something aint right.

I've stopped doing this now for almost 2 months, never again.

This is handy I appreciate that. I called the dealership in NM and they sent me the time they scanned it in August, so now I have that for my new service dealer. This friday is my "2nd attempt" even thought I've had it scanned and codes cleared more times than that. Really hoping its not the case but we shall see.

Done. I've stopped almost 2 months ago and will never do it again. Maybe you have some insight on this. Once when I was filling this summer when it would click and I'd get in the normal range for a tank was 320-326. One time I prepaid, it put all the gas in and i turned the truck on it said 385! So to me it seems like the pump did it that time. whats up with that?

    From here on out.

I'll get under my truck today and take a look for any visible signs under and around the gas tank. The CEL is back (surprise) and I'm back at the dealership on Friday. Will keep the thread updated.

It's your truck, and you will do what you feel is right. From my experience, this issue is a rabbit hole with no answers. I do have a theory as to what is happening though. If you have ever removed the Schrader valve out of an inflated tire and see it freeze up, I believe that this is what is happening under the right conditions during the leak test. For me, it always seems to occur in fall or after a fresh snow fall. When temperatures are cool but not freezing. The conditions are perfect for the a valve to temporarily freeze while the test is done and causes a leak failure. Throwing the codes. Now this is my theory, I have not been able to prove it. Everytime I have tested the system after a failure it passes...

So i thought I would update this for anyone interested..

The dealer found the problem and it has been resolved. No CEL now for the past week, fingers crossed.

They said the pump that runs the emissions leak test after the truck is off has a malfunction. They told me that's why a lot of the codes contradicted themselves. IE.. "Purge valve stuck open" with a code also reading "Purge valve stuck closed"

Said they haven't seen one fail and had to phone the regional tech for advice and diagnosis.

Unsure of cost since it was covered under warranty.
