I have a 2017 Tacoma SR5 with the 6 cylinder engine. I was averaging about 23 mpg now all of a sudden I’m getting about 16 mpg. It seems like this has occurred since I put my snow tires on. Now I don’t really believe that because I put them on every year and this has never happened. It only has 34,000 miles on it. Any thoughts as to what this may be?

OP sorry it’s not a Prius. Tacoma’s are not the best on mpg’s. It’s a truck DGAF

He still deserves a welcome? Maybe that's what DGAF means?

If nothing else changed but the tires, that’s likely what it is. There’s a lot of factors that can affect MPG… like winter mix gas, driving conditions etc

I'm getting the same exact numbers. 22mpg, down to 16mpg now. But I switched from an automatic SR to a manual TRD, so I know the reason.

Have you compared tire pressures? Lower PSI plus heavier tires could lower ~2mpg, but not 6.

idiotic comment of the day award here. But sure, it’s not a Prius so you should expect a sudden 40% drop in fuel economy and no, it couldn’t at all indicate something is wrong.

    OP
34k is obviously low for major mechanical problems. First things first, tire pressure (check the gauge too), calculate mileage by hand, look for alignment issues (some places offer free check), make sure all the wheels rotate freely, etc

next up see if your drive changed. New route, different speeds, different driving style (cruise vs not vs radar cruise etc).

have you changed gas stations? Maybe try a new one. Try different fuel, different octane, etc to see if a big change is noticed.

have you noticed anything different with the truck? Engine fan stuck? Etc?

16 seems about right for most city driving. Getting 23 overall seems inaccurate to me. On a road trip under ideal conditions I've hit 22 a couple of times. But closer to 19-20 highway is typical for me

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:.

Snow tires add a lot of rolling resistance and weight, both enemies of economy.
Winter blend fuels also contain less energy so fuel consumption will be higher also.

    SUMMER GASOLINE
In the warmer months, gasoline has a greater chance of evaporating from your car’s fuel system. This can produce additional smog and increased emissions. Refiners reduce the chance of gas evaporation in your car during the summer by producing gasoline blends that have lower Reid vapor pressure (RVP), or lower volatility. These blends vary from state-to-state, region-to-region due to RVP state regulations. Summer gasoline contains about 1.7 percent more energy than winter gasoline.

    WINTER GASOLINE
In winter, gasoline blends have a higher Reid vapor pressure, meaning they evaporate more easily and allow gasoline to ignite more easily to start your car in cold temperatures.

Are your winters on steel wheels?

I'll second everything everyone has already said. Your "before" mpg seems a little high. Winter tires aren't as good on gas, especially when they are still "soft" before it gets actually cold. Winter gas absolutely kills MPGs.

How long have you been seeing low mileage? If it's just one tank I'd see what happen over a couple more. Calculate by hand if it's still a concern.

it's colder now and the air is drier. maybe ECU needs some time to adjust to the new conditions.
