    second dumbest comment

just because a comment is made doesn’t mean it isn’t idiotic. That’s like claiming “it’s my opinion” on an oil change thread. You want your opinion to matter because you have one, go to an art show. Want your comment to matter because you made it, don’t be a moron

Not sure why you are comparing 1GR FE and 2GR FKS. Stock to stock, the latter is about 20-25% more efficient.

    Welcome to TW.
    Let's see: You have a 2017. Assuming you bought it new, it's about 5 years old. You're averaging about 7K miles/year or roughly 134 miles/week or 19 miles/day.
It ain't hardly getting warmed up at that rate.
Winter fuel, snow tires, relatively short drives ...
Your expectations are too high and I really doubt your 23 mpg average. Did you calculate between fill-ups, which are likely happening every 2 weeks?

I have yet to read a post you made that means anything or adds any knowledge to the group. Your comments are just that... comments. Let me know when you actually add something to the threads. Good luck man.

    Enough for now
Are you driving in snow or ice conditions? That’s a pretty drastic change. I have a similar experience when I’m driving around town compared to mostly highway but I also drive my truck hard to keep up with city traffic and SoCal drivers. Have you been resetting the mpg counter on the eco app of your head unit after each fill up? I think this helps and have been doing it for three years

then apparently you cannot read because it’s right there in my first post. But hey, just typing words that sound good doesn’t at all support what I’m saying…

If switching to the same tires for the last couple of years with no change, and this year there’s a big difference….. I’d be checking those tires closely. Something has changed, my bet the tires are having a problem somehow, air pressure, tread or belt separation, something seems up with the tires in my little opinion.

Wow. I feel sorry for you in getting such poor MPG. Of course there may be a lot of factors that feed into it such as if you have a lot of hills in your area, as we all know, the dang truck downshifts all the way to hell, whenever it encounters a hill, and the rpms ZOOM all the way up to Heaven until the top of the hill is reached. But also, it could depend on if you have that button depressed on the dash to change the way the transmission shifts. Finally, it could depend too, on how you drive the truck especially during those first 6000 miles or so. For me, I consistently get 25-30 around town, which in our town is 25mph almost all over town. On the highway, I am once again, consistently averaging over 25mpg. I will attach pics..When I drive around town, the only time it dips down is when I stop at stop signs and then accelerate to local speed. Once I get there, it pretty much stays at around 30mpg. Heck, I am totally satisfied with my mpg!.trdgasmileagetownandroadcombined.jpg trdgasmileagetownandroadcombined.jpg trdgasmileagearoundtown05292020.jpg

For those claiming 23 is a bit high: it may be true but isn't out of the question. I can reach 23 MPG at 70 MPH in the summer quite a bit and have even seen 25 MPG.

That being said, OP, I will echo the statements that have been made here. Tires will play a factor especially since winter tires are much softer. Winter fuel and warming up the vehicle (or lack thereof) will also affect it as will temperature. In the above stated scenario I will typically see around 18-20 in the winter.

Winter/summer fuel mix is regional and not dramatically different. Longer warm up, idling while waiting, snow tires yep it's a fact of life vehicles get poorer mileage. It's 22 here this morning in ME so I'm guessing FL is a good bit warmer.

    Welcome
Your MPG swings sound normal. My work F150 and my Tacoma, I can get low 20s all highway in the summer, and mid teens in winter with long warm ups and short trips.
We noticed on Not so fuel efficient vehicles, large swings with small changes. Most don't take note of a eco-box going from 38 to 32 MPG, cause the impact at the pump isn't as noticable.

I've experienced similar results but not quite as drastic. Was averaging consistently 22-23, put bigger AT tires (Toyo AT3's 265/70r17) and watched it fall to 18mpg or so. I drive 95% highway miles (albeit in traffic) for my 98mile roundtrip commute from CT into Queens in NYC each day. Coupled with the gas prices going through the roof, and it's hurt the wallet a little more than I was hoping for when I made the decision. Hopefully there's accuracy to this "winter mix" gas stuff and I can get closer to the 20mpg mark when it warms up...

Good luck! And don't be ashamed of wanting good MPG's out of your Taco. We all bought a truck knowing what we were getting into, but that doesn't mean we can't want to save some cash where at all possible.

I'm thinking you may be correct. I switch my rims and tires over every year and I've never had this happen. I'll check that out. I do know that the air pressure is fine but it has gotten a little weird handling a few times. Thanks for the tip.

I tried scrolling through, but haven't seen this question asked yet:

For how long have you seen 16 mpg? One trip, one tank, or one month?

Gas mileage is funky, man. I once dropped 3 mpg in a week purely because I was stressed with work at the time. Didn't even feel like I was driving differently, but those subtle changes when the light turns green add up in a big way. Also, weather changes - wind hits this truck harder than most vehicles, same with temperature. Actually, everything about this truck makes it the most sensitive to mileage out of any vehicle Ive owned.

Don't freak out until you see several months of 16 mpg. If the long-long term mileage changes, that's when you need to troubleshoot.

Well, I bought it in 2019 with 6,000 miles on it. I also have gotten 23 mpg for the last two years. Yes, it dips in the winter when I warm it up and put the snow tires on but it hasn't been that cold in NW PA yet. I'm not looking at my average. I'm looking at my gas mileage for that particular trip when I turn it off. I only travel 3 miles to work but it always says between 19 and 21 mpg. Now I'm getting between 14 and 17 mpg. This isn't me overreacting to colder weather. This is something different.

Idling your truck can reduce that number as well, if you have cold mornings and are warming your truck up before work.
