Me too, it takes me all the way back to high school machine shop class

 

i wish my school had shop class. :/

Here's one I built with lumber I had lying around after I pulled down a temporary wall in my basement.

 

My work benches and welding table are flat surfaces that have been found a nice easy place to sit things the last 20 years .

When I can see the surface again I might take pictures .

 

This is one of my benches in the garage. The top is a kitchen counter top. I made the cut out for the matter saw so I have full support when cutting long stuff.





Kinda a mess now. About to start another project. A new porch on north side of the house.

 

Little update. Finally put some pegboard up and expanded my tool collection quite a bit, although not in the happiest of ways... my Dad passed away earlier this year and I got my pick of any of his tools that I could use. He was a mechanic since he was 15 years old (and passed at 83), so he had collected A LOT of tools over his lifetime. My sisters don’t want any of them, and my brother lives in an apartment, so naturally all his tools went to me. I still need to pick up his 30 gal. air compressor that he built in 1960 and perfectly maintained for 6 decades! He also has a really cool drill press from the 1940s or ‘50s that still works, which I’m trying to make some room for. I think the air comp will fit nicely right under my workbench...



And here’s me putting some of this stuff to use yesterday, installing a lift on my Taco...

 

Looking at these pictures I could never hang things on the wall.

Either the Work bench would need to be so narrow it would be a shelf or I would need a ladder to reach anything.

Having Short Arms can be a pain when your long from the shoulders to your hips

 

What kind of garage flooring is that?

 

It’s aircraft hangar flooring. The guy I bought my house from works for an airport and got a bunch of material that was left over on a big job. I was going to remove it when we moved in, but after doing my first oil change laying on it, it was staying. It’s all like 3x3’ squares glued to the concrete. He gave me a pile of extra squares large enough to probably re-cover 1/2 the garage, so when one square gets too dirty, I can just peel it up and replace it.

I have three rows of shelves above my work benches and tool chest. The first shelf is about 7 feet up so it's not in the way when standing under it. I have a 2 foot double sided step ladder which I use to access the bottom two shelves. For the upper row, I lean a 7 foot step ladder against the bottom shelf sort of like a library ladder.

It provides a tremendous amount of storage for things that are only used occasionally.

 

Does the job. Added a 4" Wilton after the photo was taken. Thinking about going to a bigger deck or a mobile toolcart though. 4' is just a touch too small once you get working.

I recently bought this work table/cabinet from U-Line and I gotta say it’s one helluva sturdy, commercial grade unit. If anyone’s looking for something like this, this one is way better built by far than anything I found at Lowes, HD or anywhere else. And for about the same price. They have different sizes and table top options on their website too. I’m not affiliated at all, I just like to let others know about good stuff.



I’ve made a little bit of progress on my work area since last year too. I added another small toolbox and a few other things. I think I’ve used the space I have to work with about to the fullest.

 

Pretty cool from u-line. Do you know the model #?

Update related to post 16 from 2017!

Move in 2019 forced downsizing and organization. One old work bench is now in daughters garage for her pottery projects. I recycled several things to come up with this in the smaller garage.......




I also refurbished Dad's late 40's Craftsman box and located it in the utility area upstairs. Lets me have basic inside working tools close w/o going down to garage, as seen in this thread.
