Hi all Taco lovers I was wondering are we obligated to take our trucks to the dealer for all our service or maintenance work.
I have been doing it for years and decided why when I can go to a closer garage who has a good reputable name for service and quality work.
I live 2 hours away from the dealer and it makes sense for me to go somewhere closer save on mileage and gas. The garage said they will download the Toyota maintenance schedules and told me to keep my receipts for warranty coverage if needed. So like to hear what you guys think.
I would like to turn this into a poll

^ This, you are under no obligation to use Toyota for your maintenance But, you must not only follow their schedule as listed in the owners manual you must also keep your own records and receipts as proof.

Never let a dealership make you feel you HAVE to go to them for service. It’s completely up to you and as long as you keep things documented (under warranty or not) you will be fine.

Highly recommend starting a nice neat maintenance log, keep a receipt of every oil and filter purchase, and take a photo or video at each oil change.

Do the maintenance yourself without worry. No one will service your truck better than you.

Are you not getting the first two years of toyota-care for free?

A question worth asking is whether Toyota Care free maintenance has a positive or negative value.

    No

Maintenance isn't an obligation either. The way Tacomas currently hold value, I would just trade in when you are due for an oil change.

No not here in Canada they do not offer Toyota care. You pay for everything.

Dealer seems to think so when you come to trade in they always say was service by Toyota and have records to prove but it really don't mean shit at all lol cause the new owner would probably never see any of it or care where it was serviced.

You can take your car wherever you want to have it serviced, it also shouldn't matter for warranty. I've taken cars to the dealer for warranty work only in the past.

The only good thing about having it serviced at the dealer is if there are any warranty issues and the vehicle has to stay overnight they will give you a loaner. Somewhere else they will give you a ride home and you are on your own. Just saying.

No. As long as you follow the recommended service intervals, the warranty can not be voided. Just make sure you keep all your receipts and records.

My point was there are a lot of horror stories of f’d up dealer oil changes and tire rotations and whatnot, so even if I bought a new 3rd Gen with free service, quite frankly I wouldn’t use it.

YES. You have to take it to them or all warranty is void
