The rock that had the same 4runner since 2003. I was surprised by the composite bed i am open to the concept. I hate rust. I dont see how spraying a coating on a painted surface would enhance rust. I seen stories of people preping frame and having rust later. I would not spray the frame if bear metal with out first priming and painting. Ify frame starts to rust i will post.

Next hot new thing, right. You guessed wrong. I would have waited until 2023. Or got the new tundra. I have 2 1985 celica gts, concertible and a hatch. Son has a1987 supra i am more of an old school guy.
I had always planned to buy another 4runner. I have always been a toyota guy. I chose to get the truck because it had better gas mileage and could tow a little more than the 4runner, and perhaps i wanted something different, If dealers had new trucks on the lot i would have looked more closely.

Being from upper MO myself, I can't help but still be concerned about your frame with the rubberized coating. It's one rock chip away from absorbing water under it.

Eventually, that coating will probably become like a plastic bag for the rust underneath it while any chips or nicks made by rocks will continue wicking moisture underneath the coating. You might want to do an annual application of something that actually displaces the water and moisture, like a lanolin product.

Not that the rubberized coating is bad per se, just that these frames almost seem designed to turn into red dust. I just did a Fluid Film Application for @Slashaar so maybe he cold weigh in on this. I'm not sure how surprised he was at his frame's level of corrosion, but I was a bit surprised because ours are similar years and the difference was drastic even though it was only surface rust.

I was taken aback by that one section of rusty frame. It was in the realm of Paint + .010 +/- .005 of solid flakes were I to actually chip it all off. I think come spring I'll hit that with the grinder and bring it down to bare metal, then primer and paint with rustoleum to try to keep it from coming back. For now the fluid film should stay pretty well for the winter I hope. My frame wasn't super terrible, but for what rust it has in only 6 years since being in the factory is a bit too much for my liking. Salty Midwest winters don't help, but I'm hoping to keep this thing till I pass on from this life, so keeping the frame intact will be something I'll have to keep up with.

Eventually, if I get the space and time to do so, I want to strip the entire truck down to the frame and completely go over it front to back, either having it sandblasted and coated or completely re-engineering the frame from proper materials (read as 'boxed').

I am not familiar with fluid films. I have old cars and keep them rust free by not driving them when snow starts flying. I wish i had done something to my 4 runner when i got. It and now my taco are my winter/ rain day driver. If there is not a thread dealing with rust protection there should be one. This will be a long term test for me as i plan to keep as long as i did my 4 runner. If i see rust in the first 5 years i know i will have to do something different. If others have used films add want to post what they think short and long term it would be helpful.

There are many threads existing on the topic. Easy to find using the search function

Fluid Film is a product, as are Wool Wax and Cosmoline. A web search will turn up product info to peruse.

At this point the tough part may be getting off what you already applied.

Composite box is at very least 300% stronger than steel box and has been a huge success for Toyota. That’s why it’s been around since 2005. A lotta fellas have made halfway decent body armour out of uses Tacoma boxes. Said to stop a shell from a 40mm Bofors.

The frame is c-channel because it is directly modelled after the Unimog frame and is an homage to the frames used on Dumptrucks for both flex and strength.

Thank god it is not another shitty box frame made out of paper thin metal.

    This.

Ford went to the all aluminum body. You would think aluminum was better than the plastic bed as you call it. Well not until people dropped heavy things into the beds that did not have liners and a sharp corner or edge punched right thru the aluminum. Composite beds are strong and light.

Frame's the same since 05 and extremely similar to my 98 (which would go back to 96 essentially).

I have been on other sites that have better organization and searchability.

The box frame on my 4runner t100 and 86 4x4 were not thin metal. Very strong.

I may find that i like the beds and yes perhaps i should have searched this forum for information. I would not have considered searching composit box. The two trucks i looked at just looked like it had a bed liner.

I have read about some of the other products metioned above, you need to reapply regularly. Not sure i like that.i mean at some point i will need to do some work under there.

It's a different product for a different purpose, so yeah. Do what you feel is best.

Working on it with Fluid Film on the parts is way better than ever worrying about my frame. Brake cleaner takes it off anyway. Again, do whatever you want. It's just advice as to what has and hasn't worked for myself and others here.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Wait until he finds out the engine block is made out of recycled polycarbonate as well... and that the truck gets the best fuel economy when you keep it in manual 3rd gear at all times.
Oh.. And that the radio only receives Spanish stations if the truck was built in Mexico.

Well, i am finding this an eclectic group on this forum.
I hope the radio plays english i failed spanish.

As for my 1933beer. I have had this username for years. After my first trip to Germany i could not drink bud, miller so on, so i started brewing beer. I needed a email address and a user name on forms. 1933 was the repeal of prohibition. The Volsted act. It was only a few years ago that we finally had more brewies in this country than we did when prohibition started. Cars, beer, women and military thats my life. I retired from AF, some day i mya be to old for women and beer but not to have fun in cars. ( at least i hope) in heaven ther is no beer thats why we drink it here. Prost
