    Gen II Tacoma Mounting Idea
For you Gen II folks, I think I have a way to mount the X1 without having to use starboard on the bed rails. Most of us know the X1 is really tailored to fit the Gen III. There are tabs on the bottom of the X1 that fit down inside the inner wall of the bed of the Gen III, but they will hit the T-Channels on the Gen II so we need to raise the X1 up so it doesn't hit. The problem with doing this is that the locating tabs don't work anymore and the camper can "in theory" slide around on the top of the rail.

I propose removing our T-Channels and replacing them with a 1-1/2" angle pieces. I'm thinking this will create plenty of space for the tabs to drop down inside the bed. I could then use a hunk of hard rubber or plastic to fill the space between the X1 positioning tab and the angle piece. My drifter isn't ready for another month so I anxious to hear what other Gen II owner think of my idea. Incidentally, I swapped out my stock bed caps for 1/8" thick voodoo ones. I'm trying to keep my overall height as low as possible so I can actually park in my garage. I also put on a short antenna so I'm ready to limbo.

In the sketch below, I omitted the gasket between the bed cap and X1 for clarity.

I was thinking similar but would only apply if you added the flat metal. on mine I still have stick rails so no side issues but up front they added some starboard. That’s where my big problem is as the tabs are useless up front.

^^ @DavidS this is what I'm trying to solve as well. The front locating tab and lack of support for it on the 2nd Gens. I see what you're talking about though, but for me, and others like @nudavinci64, we have our stock rails and me personally, would like to keep my T-Slot Channels.

I'll have to post in here as well. Screenshots and info on what I'm thinking for a solid, secured front filler attached to the bed itself. For 2nd gens only of course. I reached out to them.. no response yet.. and our install date is the 22nd. Think I may try and call today.

So here's a breakdown of what I'm thinking for 2nd gens and the locating tabs of the X1 on the front side/cab side of the bed.

    PXL_20211021_020435823.jpg

    PXL_20211021_020435823_2.jpg

Green is a solid bar or square tube of aluminum machined to fit across on the top of the bed. This would be hard mounted with hardware. The locating tabs of the X1 would then make contact with that instead of their starboard. That would keep the camper from being able to slide forward. It just needs something to catch it.. that's attached to the bed.

I would then add a 1/8" thick sheet of aluminum along the entire top of the bed rails.. making a giant U... Making a nice even flat surface for the camper to sit on.

Pretty accurate model of everything. Forgot I modeled the bed years ago... and glad I took my time and made it to the real deal. lol modeled the bed rails and my bed cap idea real quick.

first pic is of the front of the bed against the cab. It has the factory bed with the factory plastic bedrails. note the height difference. (about .750")

    upload_2021-10-20_20-7-15.jpg

here's my idea for a filler. Aluminum square tube cut to fit between that gap (57"). secured to the bed. This is where I need to verify with them.. I can make it 1" wide (shown in pic).. so it sits behind the factory accessory rail (u channel).. OR.. make it 2" wide so it comes flush to the U channel. Making it 2" wide would allow easier attachment to the bed. drill holes in the top of the U channel and bolt & nut it with easy access through the front of the U channel. I just dont know if this will interfere with the X1. If I have to make it only 1" wide.. it would land on the 1" wide fiberglass bed portion all the way against the cab. this would mean it would need to be screwed in, or have some inserts installed. Regardless.. it would be attached to the bed and make for a solid catch point for the X1 tab.

    upload_2021-10-20_20-14-49.jpg

I'll go back and adjust for more detail if this is even worth it. I'll add the thru bores for accessing hardware through the square tube and show where they will bolt into the bed, etc.

You forgot the picture that I assume it's referencing...

But100% I prefer to keep my rails as well. I was thinking it would have been even more baller if the X1 extended enough so the X1 itself could bolt directly to the rails.

Does it not show the pictures? Total of 5. breaks it all down.

but yes I agree.. bolting directly to would be preferred. I'm just trying to eliminate the problem of the camper sliding forward with heavier use. thats a big concern of mine. I know it will happen with how we wheel.

No pictures at least for me but def surprised they did not think to do that even for the 3rd gen as they have rails.

now we're in business. Excellent! I like the idea. Any idea needed to be permanent of sorts. If SP had made that part don't he 2nd gen dip down and have a longer tab we would be in business but this def is a nice adjustment plus I assume we would swap out the plastic rails for new ones you modeled?

I think I need to make a trip to AZ.. =)

I'm actually thinking of adding 1/8" aluminum on top of factory rails. The front square tube would be to bring it up flush with the factory rails, then the top 1/8" thick aluminum plates would lay on top of all 3 sides. secured with either hardware in to that front square tube, or some 3M tape along the underside. at that point.. its just there to create a nice flat, even surface all the way around for the camper to sit on and seal to, vs all the inconsistency of the bed rails, the corner gaps, their starboard, etc.

For @DavidS idea, I would skip the 1/8" angle aluminum and just re-drill the bed 1-2" lower to mount those t-slot channels there. Buy extra bolts to still bolt down the KBVoodoo bed rail caps (or Relentless if you're lucky enough to have those). You'd still have the channels and with them being lower, the X-1 inner tabs wouldn't be hitting/interfering with them.

Still doesn't solve the issue of the poorly designed clamps though.

the easier question to answer might be why these slide and other regular canopies/toppers dont.
Not super necessary from my experience. I haven’t seen any issues with sealing to factory bed caps.

yeah thats not my main concern either, that was just a by-product of having a solid, even plane for everything to sit on.

and I would guess the weight of the camper, paired with nothing to "catch" it from sliding forward. Hence my desire to secure something solid to the bed, then the X1 does have a solid stop.

I'll have to look closer at my config today/tomorrow and try to understand why i havent seen any real movement on the front rail.

it's really just a couple people with heavy use it has happened to. I just know my truck will see similar scenarios.. so I'd like to take all the preventative measure as I can.

no doubt - ive dont hours on FS roads, but not any crawling. i wonder why regular canopy/toppers don't have this same issue unless its all about the clamps.

I think that has a lot to do with it.. plus the added weight and overhang which might put extra force or leverage towards that end of the camper.
