Thoughts on lightweight 24" bikes for the kiddos?

read through all the two wheeling tots and bike dad thoughts.

Leaning towards a Woom Off 5 (or off Air) or a Vitus Nucleus 24..

Big purchases, especially huge ones like dropping $1,200 on a shock, will skew your perspective for sure! But, I actually rode the Wrecker with the RS super-duper-extra-special-luxe-deluxe (or whatever the fuh they call it) for a few hundred miles. Even threw on that adjustable coil rate spring to dial it in. It was good, like really good, so I was in no hurry to go the 11-6 route. And in 100% honesty, it didn't transform the bike since it came with a coil from Evil in the first place. But, the Push shock really is a serious bit of kit. It's damping is definitely a noticeable improvement, and it's adjustability is impressive. One of the things that sold me on it was the two damper circuits. It has a flip switch, but it actually has two damper tunes. One is plush, one is firm. BUT, you can adjust both independently for HSC/LSC. Rebound stays the same, since it's really directly tied to spring rate and doesn't need any change once you dial in the feel you're after. So, you can have a tune for whatever you ride more of. It doesn't have to be a climb switch. When I rode a shit-ton of technical climbing in CO, I had one circuit set up for that specific kind of trail. When I was riding more park jumps and flow trails, I tuned one circuit for that. But I always left the more open circuit as my all-around DH mode.
Specifically to the 11-6:
The only downsides I've found are:
1. It's coil, so it's heavier
2. It's coil, so swapping spring rates is a PIA, and expensive
3. The two damper circuits are set up a firmer and softer off the bat. That means you can't really get the softer circuit as stiff, or the stiffer circuit as soft. Which is fine, cause, why would you?

Upsides?
1. Non-existent trail chatter
2. You can actually pump through chunk, like flow through it and pop if you want to
3. Set-and-forget once you have the setup you like
4. Two tunable, independent circuits
5. Dead reliable. Once a year maintenance
6. No more setting/checking pressure, no air sleeve maintenance

I honestly don't think I'd swap back to other coils though. The offering from Fox, RS, MRP, etc... are good but don't really offer a bump in performance per-se. They just offer a different riding feel. What most people notice right away, and why they rant "OMG, greatest thing EVA!" is the small bump absorption. Reducing trail chatter with coil is very noticeable, which is why so many people love it. There are trade-offs though, as most know by now.
The 11-6 has a host of other improvements above any other offering though, and it really is tuned to the bike's kinematics, and your riding preferences when you get it. I think it's certainly worth the $$, and I won't change it out.
Of my 3 bikes ('21 Evil Wrecker, '21 YT Decoy, '20 Django) only the Wrecker has a coil now. The Decoy is 50lbs of ebike plow, and on a DPX2 to retain some pop. The Django is a light "downcountry" bike on a DPS and that's just fine.
Will it make you faster? Maybe, since speed is so heavily determined by comfort, control, and confidence. Will it make you like riding more? Probably not, since riding is fun on most anything. Should everyone go get one, like NOW? No. Definitely not. It's stupid expensive, and isn't made for every bike. But, if your bike is on their list of tunes and you are the kind of person that likes to tune your ride, and is after that last little bit of performance gain, then definitely yes.
I wish we were closer, I'd love for you to try out the bike. I think you'd be converted. Utah trip?

Salt Lake, Park City are my usual riding areas. But, if you come out I can meet almost anywhere in the state. I know you've been wheeling in Moab, and love forests, so maybe split your time up with some northern and southern UT fun. I have a few rides I know you'd love

Late Sept / Early October is the tits in Utah! Snow starts to fly mid-month in Oct usually so plan ahead for northern UT riding.

This has been my route for the past couple weeks.

 

Ended up with another gorgeous 75 degree day here, so I got another ride in!

I attempted this trail from the other direction than what I typically do in order to try going down a short, rocky, technical section rather than climb it.

I had nearly made it past when I got a little too slow, dropped my front tire off a little step and side endo’d into some rocks. The bike was fine and I cheese gratered my left arm pretty good, but kept going. All in all, it was nice to get my first crash out of the way haha!

Despite the spill, it was such a beautiful day out there, and I’m learning more and more about my (lack of?) capabilities. Even though I’m an over-biked noob, I’m fully obsessed and find myself thinking about riding all the time nowadays.

Days like I had the last couple rides are gonna be few and far between, but I’m looking forward to getting my conditioning squared away over the winter and being ready to really get after it in the spring!

Back in the ‘80’s Cal State Parks was very anti-mountain bike and Annadel was a destination even for us in the South Bay. I was last there about 8 years ago when I rode a friend’s modern (ie built in the 21st century) bike … a year later I bought my Tallboy and changed my life.

 

Hey Guys, Im heading down to the Asheville area of NC with my wife staying Monday to Friday. Were staying in the Spruce Pine area, what do you guys recommend for mountain biking or other things to see? I know Pisgah is huge for it and plan to head there to either hike or MTB for one day. What other recommendations do you guys have to ride at, or generally do while down there in the area?

As far as Pisgah, what is a good starting point closer to Asheville we should begin at?

Any pertinent info anyone has would be greatly appreciated, its our first time down in the area and it seems like Fall is a great time to be down there.
