Truck won't move backward after a wash

I washed my truck on Monday evening, but didn't need to drive it again until Thursday and it was parked in the garage that whole time. When I tried to drive it Thursday, it would start to roll back, then stop like the brakes had been applied. It's done this before and it seemed like turning off PCS fixed it, but that's odd because I thought it only worked in the front. Anyway, I found a post online that suggested the rear shoes might be "stuck" so I got the truck as far back as it would go, then eased forward and pushed the brakes while it was in motion. I did this 5 or 6 times and it finally returned to normal. Should I be concerned or should I just make sure to drive it a bit after a wash to toss off any water that might be near the rear drums?

A wash shouldn't make your shoes stick. Sounds like a rear brake adjustment is needed. Take it to a dealer and have them look at it and fix it under warranty for sure.

What is PCS? I think your idea of a drive after washing sounds like a good thing to try. After commenting that I've never had my rear brakes hang up, sure enough they did. It was same situation of washing it then letting it sit in the garage a few days. It wasn't any big deal, but the brakes released with a bit of a bang or pop..

Rear brake shoes will stick after a wash due to rusting. They will also freeze if you have winter. But after you wash your truck with any kind of under body spray, you should ride the parking brake a bit to cook out any water if your planning to park it right after the wash.

Thanks for that suggestion. I will do that ASAP. I have had one other person recommend this to me, but I thought I'd post it here in case it's a Tacoma-specific issue. I did have my tires rotated a couple weeks back, but I've driven a fair amount since then.

Pre-collision system. Mine didn't seem to make any noise, I just noticed that every time I rolled back I made it a little further.

Here are mine getting unstuck. I washed the night before, then parked it with the parking brake on. I have a auto so I dont need to use the parking brake, but I did because of the snow. Now I either drive a little extra or ride the parking brake to clear out the water before parking it.

I had to put it in 4w low to break them free.

I failed to mention I did that as well. I found a separate post that mentioned that. I'm not sure what that does for the process.

Nothing really other than applying a ton more power to break the shoes free.

It's normal if you don't drive after a wash. It won't necessarily happen every time, but it's happened to me a handful of times. Just try and remember to go for a drive around the block next time.

I had to do this to get a water truck pulled out of a bay door. Was not fun when it lurched.

Yeah, I normally just pull into the garage and let it sit, but I'll make sure and drive it right after, next time.

I'd advise not to do that. I ended up breaking my backing plate and twisting my brake shoe inside the drum because of that.

I dont think that has to do with putting it in 4w low but rather that your were just really really stuck. 2 wheel or 4 wheel high either would of done nothing or also broke the same thing.

What I'm saying is don't use force to break it loose. I edited my post to include photos. You can see the bolts that the drum hardware are attached to on the backing plate are bent and they were loose, causing a rattling noise when braking. Also, the twisted shoe of course.

What has worked for me was to grab the e-brake cable near where it enters the drum and wiggling it back and forth. It generally can loosen it up.
