This was one of the first things I learned how to do after I acquired my truck. I learned about it from this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tQVov0Ra8g

I make sure I kill the RF from my key fob except when I know I'm going to go back into the truck in under half an hour.

Another idea, which I learned from my former university's police department, is to use two kinds of locks on your car. I haven't yet bothered doing this because I live in an apartment complex and so far have parked in mostly "safe" places. Some ideas on this front are: combine the regular RF kill method + a steering wheel lock, or way better a kill switch. Speaking of which, I don't know how kill switches work in 3rd gen land, so any advice there will be appreciated.

This is the thing that is missed a lot. Any security system can be defeated by a determined thief, but really, why would they bother if they can find easier prey? My university's police department (which I quote again) told us the following to deter bike theft -- lock it with both a U-lock and a chain lock. They require different sets of tools to crack. Chances are a thief is carrying only one set. But well, what if they're carrying both? Still, 2x the work -- might as well move on to the nearby bike that only had a chain lock on it. The key idea is to not have your Taco be the slowest deer.

Wow, over react much? My point is that you can add all the deterrents you want (alarms, kill switches, club, etc) but if someone wants your vehicle, they will get it. Oftentimes in ways most people don’t think about.

Does that mean I leave my Taco unlocked with the key on the dash? Of course not. However it is insured and if it got stolen it can be easily replaced. Two of my custom VW’s would be impossible to replace, so they live indoors with GPS Trackers on them.

It's cool man, I figured you were security conscious. I guess the constant "if someone wants it, they get it" is just getting to me. It's just not constructive and sounds so defeating. I'd rather hear more specifics about how to better secure and protect what we have. But that's just me. I see enough grim shit at work these days and live in a shitty city ripe with crime. I suppose im grasping for more positivity. Anyway....moving on.

It’s all good, no one likes to be a victim of crime. It sounds like it’s happened to you, it’s happened to me too. I’m all for taking reasonable precautions (and do) but I refuse to live my life in fear of being victimized. I’m all for discussing options to keep our vehicles safe. But I’m also going to make sure my insurance is paid-up, just in case

Thats fair, and solid advice. I keep my insurance up to date as well for the exact same reason and keep the classic car garaged as well...mostly because it doesn't run at the moment. Haha. Definately not living in fear either, that's no way to go through life.

I used to work in Bridgeport CT years ago back when it was not the nicest part of the state. At the time, I drove a Jeep Wrangler with a cloth roof.

I used to leave it completely empty and unlocked in the hope that the thief would try the door handle instead of cutting the top.

My anti-theft device was to simply take the coil wire with me when I parked it.

A coworker had a car alarm that triggered an alert on his phone (no siren on the car). One night he caught someone in his car in the act of trying to steal the stereo.

Things went sideways when, instead of calling the police, he decided to go after the thief with a baseball bat. He ended up getting charged with assault.

I feel you man my 2008 taco was stolen out of my driveway under a street light in the middle of night. In the days of keys and after market remote start. The thieves managed to get in the lock truck and push it out the driveway which is 300 feet to the main road. I called the cops at 2 in the morning and reported it stolen. Called the insurance the same morning and reported it.
3 days later got a call from the cops they found my truck near an abadoned railroad track burnt to the ground.
Because I live near the 401 corridor which is famous for auto thefts, contraband tobacco etc etc, the only explanation from the cops was that once the taco was stolen they noticed it was not the trim that they wanted so they just torched it. I was lucky I had the windows etched and protected against theft for 5000.00 that I received and because my truck was only 1 1/2 years old I got my full value of the truck which was in my policy replacement of full amount in the first 3 years.
So out of the deal got myself a new truck with lots of mods so was happy in a way and sad that someone would do that to my taco.

Leave the newest gun related magazine in plain view on the passenger seat of your vehicles. Doubt they would want to FAFO.

That might make the vehicle an even better target because it might have a gun in it.

Makes your house a great target as well. All a thief needs to do it wait till your fine and get some free guns.

Strange scenario, but they are pretty great. I keep one on my keys, truck, wife’s car, her purse, and our 2 dogs. For $25/each it’s a super cheap way to be able to track a handful of things as long as in you’re in a populated area where you anticipate plenty of iPhone’s to communicate their location. If they are paired with an iPhone 11 or newer the tracking is also very precise - telling you down to the foot as you get closer to it.

Not worth knocking it because you found some random tracker in your gutter that wasn’t attached to anything of value.

I couldn’t help myself and went back over to the dealer to take another look at it. It’s actually pretty good. Other than the 2 damaged areas it’s almost as I left it. I still believe I’m going to be out of a truck for a couple of weeks. I want it returned perfect.

Chevy express/GMC savanna are the same. We have a fleet of 63 vans and I can open other vans with my keys easily. Not sure about the ignition though.

That’s how our vans get broken in, and it happens quite often actually.

So here’s apparently how they did it. When they broke the door handle, that apparently gives them access to the key lock which is just a switch. They somehow jump it to unlock the truck so no alarm when the door is opened. Then they access the obd port to overwrite the key code OR pop the hood and replace the ECU with their own.

The RFID pouch won’t help. That’s not how they did it.
