Wow, even my tundra didn't look as bad after 3 years being here in connecticut. Should of used the cosmoline rp-342 soon after you got your truck. I did mine right away this time while the chassis was still freshly painted. Its been through a nasty salty winter already yet inspecting the undercarriage this summer it still looks as if it was just done. Fluid film is ok, but it sucks having to reapply it every fall, yet you still see some surface rust starting every spring due to the stuff getting washed off. Cosmoline wont wash off....at least not very easy.

    Canada Eh!
Cosmoline hasn’t been known to play well with wet undercoatings.

Answer to self, as I tried for myself a week ago. As many people just answered, spraying cosmoline over oil/wax does not work. The two did not mix at all. The result is a very thin layer of cosmoline over waxoil, which streaks easily and makes little difference from having just waxoil.

Here is another reason I like Fluid Film or WoolWax. If you coat your frame from new with one of these products and reapply every fall. If say 6 or more years later you wash the underside off with Dawn and a soft brush the frame looks 6 months old and like it should with no coating. If you use Cosmoline which is also a great product the only way you are removing it is with toluene or some other similar type. It will be extremely messy and take 10 times longer to remove and it will never look like something was not applied. So if you are never considering removing the product and do not care that it looks like product has been applied down the road the Cosmoline on a brand new truck is probably the way to go. But I'm a nut and want the ability to clean the underside back to nothing but factory paint easier down the road. And I do not mind spraying my truck annually and the results I have seen from the lanolin are superb.

Yeah, do not do what a buddy on his trd...apply cosmoline over fluid flim....ended with a dripping mess that wouldn't dry. Was a total waste of product and effort.

Any petro based product...or even paint thinner on a rag will wipe cosmoline easily off.

Is there any reason to paint the welded seams BEFORE cosmoline is applied? Seems to me that rust always starts at the seams. Is this because the factory paint there is so thin the salt eats through the thin paint at the seams first?

Here’s another one, anybody heard of it or used on their stuff? I just found out my company uses it on any bare metal surfaces on machines we ship internationally. I guess they used to use Cosmoline and switched to this Dri-Touch a while back. It’s solvent based, water displacing and has a self healing, semi solid consistency after drying. They brush it and use spray bottles filled from a 5 gallon jug.

From the description it sounds like crc or cosmoline. Probably just as expensive if offered in rattle cans.

What is considered a "wet undercoating"?

Idk about the woolwax, but when i use to apply fluid flim to my stuff it always dried like paint but when it got wet it stayed wet for awhile, and washed off.
I still think my original post above for a wet undercoating makes more sense.

Interesting to hear that cosmoline over FF or similar is no good. Anyone have experience mixing two "wet" protectants? Do Krown and FF play nice?

Here’s a product that seems to be unknown unless you have military or commercial aviation background. It has Mil Spec number and is used by most major airlines and offshore oil rigs basically anything associated with salty environments. Better than cosmoline as it does not attract dirt. Comes in dyed or clear. Dries in 1 hour. Yes it cost a little more but you don’t have to reapply every year. Did you know at some European airports the baggage handlers piss in the cargo holds while loading/unloading???
This product works to alleviate that as well.

Here's what I want to know: can I apply cosmoline or this Corban 35 if my truck has 12k miles on it?

What prep work do I need to complete to clean the underside prior or is it a lost cause now?

Yes you can, I’d get it on the rack and using a sprayer clean the entire underneath with a degreaser.

Yes there is quite a bit of aluminum and aluminum alloy parts used in aviation. The two major areas are wheel wells and cargo holds. Imagine going from 100 degrees in Las Vegas to 30 degrees below in less than half an hour, it’s a tough product. Yes I’ve used it but don’t take my word for it google corban and read up on it.
