I have been laboring over this buying decision for months, now. I started out looking for a used truck, but I am picky. I haven't been able to find a newer black TRD access cab with less than 30k miles in my area for what I want to spend! So, I have begun negotiations with the dealer. Results to follow.

I found this forum several times while doing research and have found it to be an invaluable resource and a wealth of experience. I think I will stick around!

    Tacoma vs. Titan

My Tacoma plans were almost derailed. A few days ago while hopelessly looking for the perfect used Tacoma on Autotrader, I came across a leftover '10 Nissan Titan. It was a brand new black Titan king cab Pro4X. I'm not going to lie, it is a damned good looking truck! The dealer wants $26k for it. That seemed like a pretty fine deal to me, especially considering that is $5k cheaper than the advertised price on a new Tacoma and about the same price as Tacomas with 30k miles on them. I talked it over with the wife and all but decided to make the long trip to Minnesota to pick it up. We were discussing leaving at the end of that work day (I happened to be off) when my wife suggested I go to the local dealer and test drive one.

Believe it or not, up to that point I hadn't even driven a Tacoma, either. Since the Toyota and Nissan dealerships are neighbors, I decided to drive both back-to-back.

First was the Tacoma. Except for color, it was pretty much the exact truck I want...access cab TRD Sport 4x4. Driving it pretty much confirmed all my suspicions. The truck was sporty, peppy, just the right size, properly laid out, and was just fun to drive. If not for the color I would have been happy driving it home right then. I hated to drop it back off, but I was a bit excited to drive the Titan knowing the good deal pending and how sharp it looked.

They didn't have a king cab, so I drove a quad cab Pro4X. My excitement started wearing off pretty quick. First, the truck felt like a big pick up. Despite the big V8, the truck felt like a workhorse rather than a sporty truck, and the engine was rather loud. The interior really turned me off. Large, flat, unappealing surfaces were everywhere. The center console looked like a small kitchen table, I could have projected movies onto the front of the passenger glove box, and small airplanes could have landed on the dash. The instrumentation looked plain. The bucket seats had a fold down arm rest on the right side that really irked me. If I left it up it seemed to limit movement on my right side. If I put it down I couldn't rest my arm on it with it sliding off onto the console. Ergonomically, it just didn't work at all. Despite it's sharp exterior looks, I could not see driving this truck for the next 15-20 years (I've had my current Wrangler for 14).

Despite costing me more money, I dropped the Titan idea without further ado and am again, more definitely than ever, completely sold on the Tacoma. I am now going to put my shoes on and head over to the Toyota dealer and hopefully nail a deal down!

Upgrade as in getting an off road or upgrade as in buying a sport with a rear locker?
welcome btw. You'll enjoy it here if you have an endless wallet for mods.

I have a bit of a problem when people use OTD price when it is subjective to many variables.

Anyway, it sounds like you are now saying you changed to the TRD Offroad for $28,700? What options are in this one? I use Edmunds.com to see how much the invoice with options is and then compare that to what the dealer is charging me.
