I wonder if something could be done at the recycling centers to eliminate the incentive. No teeth, no recycle :D

We're going to find out here in Oregon very soon. The State passed a law that scrapers can only buy/receive catalytic converters from commercial sellers. So Joe Dickhead Cat-Theif won't be able to offload his stolen cats as easily. At least thats the hope. Law goes into effect Jan 1st.

I really hope so. My concern is that thieves in Portland will just skip across the river to Vancouver. But it's a start.

Just curious... What is the cost savings with this vs just buying a skid plates? I have a full RCI skid plate setup on my truck. I have been seeing a lot of people install cat security lately. I feel like the skid plates is a more valuable investment if you plan to off-road much. If the thief goes through the trouble of taking my skid plates off he can have the cat at that point. IMO.

Isn't a full RCI skid set up between $800 and $1,000? Thats significantly more than just a cat cover alone.

I do agree though, if I had any intention of doing heavy offroading, I'd have skipped cat protection for actual armor. But I just don't see myself doing anything other than service roads and light trails so this suits my needs....as a bonus, it does provide a little extra "armor" to protect the transmission.

I actually wanted to know what the best stock skid plate that would also double as a good cat protector actually is....I was eyeing the CBI rear/transmission skid plate to do this. Not sure if that's the best bet vs a dedicated cat protector. Seems like it'll fit with the stock TRD plate too

I guess I didn't work it right. Yes it's def more expensive. However I see that people has been saying " I will add skids later" I feel like if you spend the money on the cat security and then go and buy skids later, you should have just saved money and bought the skids first. Not trying to knock anyone just trying to understand how people are thinking.

I totally agree with you. Some years ago wife and I each bought a mountain bike, I got a Trek and the wife got a Specialized. Then we went to another store that sold Kryptonite Fogetabout bike locks and each got one...the bikes were 3k.
Interestingly, the guy there said that most people buy cheap locks first...then they come back and invest into true security!...after their bikes got stolen...

Yeah I hear ya. I've seen similar posts to that also but I can't speak to that reasoning.

Other than maybe adding a TRD front skid (if I can find one on the cheap) I personally have no intention of getting heavy offroading skids, so this will do fine for me.

This I agree with...although, I do want a TRD Pro skid plate at the front...for aesthetics. It should mesh right up with my Talon plate...like was mentioned, the Talon is a little protection for the transmission case.

I have not priced what the gas tank plate would cost...I'd have to take a look and see what other areas have skid plates...the whole under-belly?

All of my skids are from RCI. I have front control arm skids, engine skid, transmission skid, gas tank skid, and rear diff skid. Feel free to take a look at my my build thread. If you want any pics or have wuey shoot me a message.

I'm looking at Tacomabeast for the full skid plate (2pc) for $870 + gas tank skid plate $270--about $1140 altogether. (CBI)

    That's pretty expensive but I suppose ONE could buy them individually $420 (F) + $450 (R) + $270 (Gas Tank).

Edit: RCI skids are on the lower part of the page and less expensive...I think.

Check out RCI website. I think the full skid package on steel is under 1000.

Cool stuff on there...I'm liking the RCI sliders better than what I have on my truck.

Looks like full set is $865 with 3/16 steel for the extremely light duty OEM skid plates.

So, has anyone here caught a CAT thief in the process and removed their limbs?
