05+ 4 bangers: 4.56, 4.88 info please

Ok so I know that I have PM'd almost everyone who has regeared their 4 cylinder but all the PM's are starting to blur and I wanted to get this all into a thread.

So what tires are you running (size, brand ect)?
What gears did you go with over the 4.10?
What are your highway rpm's at whatever speed you drive?
What is your gas mileage if you took a highway trip on a tank?

I have 4.56's gears but now thinking I might want to go with 35's for offroad purposes and keep the 33's as my everyday tire.

From some research:

4.10 at 65 with stock tires: 2378
4.10 at 65 with 255/85/16: 2191
4.56 at 65 with 255/85/16: 2437
4.56 at 65 with 35's: 2305
4.88 at 65 with 255/85/16: 2608
4.88 at 65 with 35's: 2467

Is that the correct overdrive ratio is is it .85?

According to cars.com the 05+ tacoma 5 speed manual tranny has these ratios:

Transmission gear ratio (1st) 3.95
Transmission gear ratio (2nd) 2.06
Transmission gear ratio (3rd) 1.44
Transmission gear ratio (4th) 1.00
Transmission gear ratio (5th) .81
Transmission gear ratio (reverse) 4.22

 

If your thinking of running 35s, chances are your going to end up with them in the end.
Dont waist your time with 4;56 if 35s are in your future.
I thought forsure the next gear thread by you would be " I LOVE MY 4:88s"
I'm actually thinking of going with 35s as well, the only reason im hesitant is with my 4:88s and 33s I love my low gear ratio, right now the truck is awesome in tight rocky terrain

Running 285/75/16 MTZs with 4:88s
Seem to be around 3000 rpms driving at 75 mph, judging by my gps as my speedo is off,
And since my speedo is off I don't have an exact mpg number. But I seem to be getting 380 ish per tank and with having 488s and only 33s truck is over geared by about 18% this is including the tire size difference. So its the opposite as running a bigger tire where your reading slower and clocking less miles, in your reading faster and clocking more miles. My speedo is reading 88 when im driving 75.. If I take 380 and minus 18% I get 312ish.. this is of course estimating and averaging everything
Wow thats the first time i calculated that out and thats pretty shitty I hope I'm wrong here..
Of course the 380 is when my light comes on and theres still fuel in the tank.

I really need to get that dakota digital box i got sitting my glovebox installed , you got me really wondering what my true mpgs are or get a scanguage would be the most accurate I guess

Is there any way of double checking that at all? Because the logic sound right but I cannot imagine you getting 312/17.5= 18MPG which is terrible lol

 

So i dis some math Idk if it make sense though. These numbers are from thw first post: 2608/2378= 1.1, then 380*.9= 342, then 342/17= 20 MPG

I am only doing 17 because that's what I'm usually at when i fill up when my light comes on. The math don't really make sense but thw mpg outcome I like better lol

Reason I did it this way is because:
2378/2378= 1
380x1= 380
380/17= 22.35 which is what could be considered stock without modification.

Another reason that makes sense to me:
2191/2378= .92
380x1.08= 410
410/17= 24.1 Which is extremely on target with the gas mileage I get with my 33's and 4.10 ratio

NVM the math gives 20 MPG going at 75 MPH which would make in untrue because you would be getting less than that....DAMN I thought I had something.

 

I wish I could ride with a 4.56 and 4.88 to feel the difference and see if it is worth losing 4-6 mpg over it.

 

4.88s with 265/75/16 (32")
3k at 70 mph
15-20 mpg. My in-town mpg increased but hwy decreased.

Gears are the best thing I've done for my truck. Getting a new lift and 33" (305/70/16) in 2 weeks so that should help with the rpms. The power is night and day from stock.

 

Looks like, since all the freeway driving the 4.56 is the way to go. Mileage will stay much more similar to now than with 4.88 and I will at least get my stock power back
