I met a fellow at Overland Expo who had a lot of experience with mounting solar, and he said that the flexible solar panels definitely needed something underneath to allow cooling airflow. He suggested that white corrugated plastic you see in various packaging, post office tote bins, etc. It's like 3/16" thick so it wouldn't add much to the height. Also pretty cheap. I don't see a downside to this solution, other than the extra work.

@RangeRick I'll assume that he glued (5200 or like) the flex panel to the corrugated plastic. Doesn't seem like that much work. That's a good idea and would definitely provide some air flow.

I'm not that tall and had a hard time reaching the upper zippers on the outside flaps, so I made these for all of the zipper handles. The ones on the outside side flaps are longer than the other ones. zipper pulls.jpg So much easier now.

When driving around while it's raining I am getting quite a bit of water coming through I think possibly the bed rail caps. Working on building out an interior and not going to be able to get that in until we get this figured out. I didn't take off the bedcaps before getting the X1 installed to do any resealing, didn't think it was necessary I never had an issue with my tonneau cover on it. Going to make it harder to reseal under there now with this sucker on. Have other 3rd gens had this issue? What have ya'll done?

Yah it’s interesting since most shells and covers wrap over the rail. Looking back at my shell not a cover it wrapped over the rail which prevented any chance of a water from the base.

Yah it’s a beefy pack if your packing all the goods, armor, rear swingout, larger tires plus the x1. With my abused Dakar leaf pack I had 9.5” axle to frame and work the new pack I am 11” axle to frame. I think stock is around 8.25-8.5 axle to frame. 3” lift leafs almost got 3”.

I went and took a look at the corners again, lifted up the fabric skirt (no comments please) and low and behold there’s a fairly big hole where the keder rail turns. Leads right inside. If the rain is heavy enough or at the right angle it could easily splash up under the fabric and into the hole. Especially if the drain holes are clogged. I remember SP talking about a “corner piece” that they decided wasn’t necessary, so I’m wondering if this was it. You can see a couple of notches in the aluminum and a nut that they said they didn’t use but go ahead a leave it there. Anyway, I’m certain this is at least one of the sources of the water intrusion.9CD3FF72-D9A9-41C1-9D46-9C15FD60E6B3.jpg60434BE0-620D-450B-9FAB-BD90B83481A7.jpg2BCA04BB-1C81-4155-8198-D967F3A27AE1.jpg

I sealed those holes, along with the matching ones at the other 6 corners (they exist at every corner of the tent), and it seems to have helped a little bit. I'm still getting a bit of water inside up in the mattress area, but I think it's just intruding along the black keder fabric line.

I wish they had gone a step further and done more weather sealing as well on the seams. As @RangeRick noted I can see through seams in many places so I can imagine its not doing so hot with water.

Can someone take a picture of the stitching points where water might be coming through? I wonder if some seam sealer might help.

If no one does I can do it later. Def easier when it is sunny. Def considering seam sealer.

Ahh I think I found my problem. Huge gaps I totally forgot about in the bed.. I had a little foam piece in the other side from my tonneau cover but this side must have fell out at some point, I added some butyl tape on both sides so I think its sealed up now. Going to test drive around tomorrow when its raining.

I am curious now to look at a 3rd gen truck that upper rail deal that sits on the shell. @XPOTRPR that seems to be our missing link a bit (although prob higher than our trucks). Maybe that aligns with your ideas.

yeah.. that whole circled drawn over block/plate/part... is what I'm trying to replicate for 2nd gens. see how that one is a hard stop for the X1 lip to hang over and catch on.. and that part is hard secured to the bed itself.. thats what I'm trying to do with mine.

3rd! I figured that was a good selling point given the regions weather

2003 1 5/8” lift, 235-85r16 BFG KO2, ARB Bull Bar, Warn M8000, sliders, Snugtop; 2015 Hefty Fab al bumper and sliders, Warn Zeon 10k, Rago bed stiffeners,
I’m starting to have weight concerns. I have a 2015 TRD Off Road. The internet specs say the load capacity is 1,280 lbs, but the door sticker shows 1,040 lbs. I’m installing HeftyWorks sliders, aluminum front full loop bumper with Warn Zeon 10k winch, SP X1, refridge, etc, etc. My spreadsheet is totaling over 1,500 lbs including two adults.

It looks like every 2nd gen is way overloaded that I see set up for overlanding/camping!
    Is anyone else concerned?

Once everything is determined, I plan to work on a 1 1/2-1 3/4” suspension lift.
