I'm thrilled to say I took this doe with a February of '64 serial Winchester Model 100 in .308. It warms my heart that a 60 year old rifle can still put food on the table.

Prob low cell reception is the issue. I need it to be accurate. I dont want to trespass on peoples property and the way that app is working it would get me in trouble

FB8A9461-66FF-4B7C-877D-912195764A12.jpg Went out this morning after a late wedding last night lol. Found this guy and sent my wife a text. Hook, line, and sinker. She got the kids up and was on the road in 30 minutes.

I watched him chase a bunch of does around rutting pretty hard. Which is kind of weird because normally the real rut action kicks in later. Don’t matter. She shows up we hike up the butte. From her arrival, up 200 vertical feet and about a half a mile it’s been 30 minutes before we finally lay eyes on him again.

Trouble is she has to shoot down 200 feet. Rangefinder was telling me he was 168 yards… not true. LOS he was probably 300+. I said maybe we should wait. Wind was swirling and shitty. Finally she decides she’s gonna take the shot. At this point one of the does he was with was onto us. She gets set up on the rifle.

Previous picture is exactly how he looked when she took the shot. Tough angle.. First shot was perfect. I watch through the binos and I swear I see a hit and he’s up and runs about 5 yards. Acting like a buck who’s hit. He stands hard quartering away and we don’t get a shot. Eventually he turns broad side and walks to our left. Again no shot. Finally he lays down and puts his head down. I pan back over with the binos and I see a big ol puddle of blood. Good hit. We backtrack and make our way down the hill. We get to about 75 yards and give a shout. He lifts his head up (we swear we didn’t see any breathing before we made a move down the hill) my wife’s already on the gun and gives him one last shot at the base of the neck and spines him. He’s done. AA55B0EC-C880-4C7F-B01B-21752065E85E.jpg5CD01870-D75B-48B5-B9BC-71CF81E6CC05.jpgKids had fun on the pack out looking for bones and what not. I gave my son the eyeball lol. He thought it was the coolest thing ever. He’d point it at me and tell me “I see you dad!!”

Easy pack out with the kids. Wife took a front and the trim meats plus the straps and I took both hinds and a front.

Wife is happy with her deer so I’m happy too lol.

Maybe I can find some time to look for elk in the near future.

Yeah best bet is to save an offline map of the area you’re hunting and hunt with your phone on airplane mode. If that doesn’t work I’d try basemaps or Gaia? I’ve never used either but I’ve heard my friends say that when their onx didnt work basemaps did.

It works pretty good for me here in NY . That’s all I pay for is NY . $29.99 a year . Or you can get the whole country for around $100 a year. They should charge the $29.99 for your first state then something like $5.99 to add a state . I don’t need the whole dang country .o_O

I use BaseMap. You can probably find a 30% off code to make it under 25$ for all 50 states. As to the jumping around though mine does that a little with every app just to settle in when I first pull it up but it narrows in in 30 seconds. This tracker shows about how well BaseMap does when I was still hunting yesterday (I didn’t walk around aimlessly as much as it shows)

Nothing but doe with fawns here, bucks are still mostly nocturnal and we don't orphan the fawns because with the amount predators on my place, they need their mommas.

When I shot that 9 pt Saturday he was about 30 yards from the corn, he ran through it and left some blood. I was hoping I got a picture of him, all I got was cobs in the air. Notice the smoke at the blind.

Had this guy show up a couple nights in a row. Hopefully he sticks around. I won’t be able to get back in the woods til Sunday. Starting to see some scrapes. Pre rut activity should get started up in the next week or so, then full blown rut action toward the end of the month.

We went over to pick Cole's meat up Saturday from the processor, a guy, his wife, and young son pulled up in a crossover type vehicle, I figured they were picking up meat. Nope, the hatch came up and he had a buck in the back. We got in the truck and my 6 year old daughter ask me "dad, why would you do that, it's got to stink". I said some people don't have a choice baby girl, I can't imagine the smell though.

Lol I put my animals in the back of my 4runner. One time I put a whole antelope buck back there. Bad choice.. Antelope are stinky animals. My car smells like sagebrush 6 months out of the year hahaha.
