I just did mine , my self . I should of taken pictures . But to all who is asking if it can be done with a cap ? part of the process , Is laying a beed of marine grade silicone around the brake light. You have to be able to access the bottom to properly seal it and smooth it out with a provided edge tools for them you attach the edge trim which has double sided tape .

If the dealer does the repair and later down the road it leaks, the fix and water damage is on their nickel. If you do the repair, not so much.

They told me I couldn’t order the part because it’s a recall. So I came home and googled it. Part #00948-CHMSL

I order mine offline from a Toyota dealership . Took multiple tries . First few companies returned my money. I finally was able to purchase one .

Which is exactly why I got it done.
Also if you don't get it done and later on it leaks it's your headache.

Noticed I had water running down the inside of my back window yesterday...was like crap! I thought the window was leaking but upon better inspection I noticed the headliner was wet so I knew it had to be coming from the antenna or the 3rd brake light. I was about to order parts and fix it myself but thought to myself, "I should check out the forum." Glad I did...Toyota is fixing it Monday.

I am going to do this myself since I have a shell and have no plans to take it off this winter. Can the trim bezel be ordered through Toyota? Any tips?

Was in for an oil change recently and the service guy mentioned the recall and they did it while I was there. Easy day, took maybe an extra ten minutes longer than the normal wait time for the oil change.

*edit to add that the service writer is a Marine as well and hooked me up with a discount on my oil change, "Brother to Brother".

I have an appt to get this done in a couple weeks. I had already siliconed around it a couple years ago when the only alternatives were to pay $600 out of pocket to have them replace it or deal with it.

It’s never had a problem since I did it but the clear silicone is noticeable and I want a factory fix.

Should I waste effort removing the silicone I have or just take it to dealer as is?

My guess is the dealer will try to charge you to remove the silicone you applied.

Classic, just juggled everything for service today, asked neighbor to help remove the shell, get to the dealer a bit early to pick up and they are OOS on trim rings.

So I’m going to have to do the shell swap again sometime. Super fun times.

Yes. They quoted me an hour, and we negotiated down to half of that. Was worth it for me to not have to leave, talk off the shell, and go back another day (they didn't warn me in advance they would charge for it).

did you ask about yours? I bought my truck used and when inspected the people said well someone already messed with it so it voids the fix... to me it sounds like if you tried to stop the water leaking they kill the warranty even though they tried to charge you before it became a known issue.

I'm actually riding Lyft as we speak from dropping mine off at Toyota.
Looks like they're replacing my headliner and we'll see on the carpet.
Of course they'll have to order it in first even though they said they would order it ahead of time....

    You have to contact them.
    They're not actively reaching out.
If you use the Toyota app it will have an alert.
