We have been installing a bunch of caps this last year taking measurements along the way to see if this was possible. 20211106_175833.jpg 20211108_081305.jpg 20211108_081449.jpg 20211108_081358.jpg

What is your power source for the light kit?

I'm working on my own canopy lights. Using 45% aluminum channel from Amazon (3.3 feet) I've made two light "bars" that are backed by magnet tap strips. The primary bar has a switch and connects to the truck battery, and there is enough slack in the wiring between the two that I can pull them off the roof and clip them to the doors to illuminate outside the cap if needed.

Once I have all the wiring done I'll post pictures (and parts list) if people are interested.

I’m just curious how to run the wire to the battery. Do you just run it a long the frame? Anyways, excited to see you post some pictures about it.

Yeah typically it’s just a positive wire that is zip tied and routed around the frame

Do you guys use any wire tube to protect it? Curious what do you use to put the wire to the battery. I’m not mechanically or electrically inclined that’s why I asked haha

Both times I had a fiberglass topper with a dome light. They did it all for me on install. It had wire tubing basically all the way until it was at the battery.

Those lights look amazing -- any idea if they're on-par or better than Matt Gecko?

The original kit I got from mattgecko for my truck bed only used a positive wire (20AWG) from the hood all the way back. I'm going to be replacing it two larger wires (one pos, one neg) to properly run back to my aux fuse box and potentially supply more power to the bed at the same time.

Running this at the back of my Decked drawer also added quick connect to dry the dishes, blow off dust and start a fire.

That looks way better on a 2nd Gen than I'd assumed -- very trick.

I don't have Matt Gecko- but I spend 3x more getting HardKorr lights. I can move the light bar around like in the awning and while I'm cooking. I have a dimmer, can change to orange lights to not attract insects. Portability is my goal.

That’s a 1st Gen. I think he’s demonstrating that they have found a specific model that will fit the 1st Gen short bed models.
Either way, great news for the hand full of people with 1st gens that be willing to spend $3,500 on a topper.

Yeah I was just thinking that. Sometimes harder to justify the 3,500 when you can get a 1st Gen topper for around 3-500 used

Correct and most people modding a 1st gen will likely be more budget driven. A fresh new RSI is probably just going to be a “maybe someday” thing versus a $500 used Leer. I dig it though.

I agree completely. For me a smart cap and a high quality RTT made more sense than a wedge camper starting at $12,000. However we still sell the wedgies. One of our builds on a first gen included an at summit that cost $14,500. Not an apples to apples comparison but us first gen people like cool stuff too.

You have admit though, you’re not an average 1st gen driver. Lol. I love that it’s a possibility and that someone is doing it. I hope we will start to see more crazy 1st gen builds as the years go on. They are relatively tiny so they make great rigs to squeeze through tight places off-road.
